Tried mine last night and can open and close via the remote.

In our manual it says that you can´t close it with your key, unless there is keyless entry. We got a 2019 model.

Think it's more of a distance behind the boot. Previously on the older models it would work wherever you were standing but 2019 seems to have altered the proximity

Will try it from the kitchen tonight, a good 30 feet away i'd say.

That must be why mine doesn't work, I have keyless entry.
It should work with keyless entry. If you don't have keyless entry, you can only close it by hand, with the botton in the tailgate or with the switch in the front door.

Contacted VW who states that it may have changed from the earlier models due to a safety....

Spoke to my dealer who gave more light on the situation.

They stated that the pressing and holding the boot opening and closing button will only close the boot if the person holding the key is around 6 feet of the boot area, this is a safety feature as you should be able to see if there is an object that may get hit by the boot closing, the safety feature of the boot will stop the boot closing fully should it hit any object but VW have decided as an extra safety feature that the person closing the boot should be in sight of this area checking all is clear and this is why you can not use this feature from a great distance.

Makes sense to be fair.

Yep, mine opens from distance but will only close if I am right behind it. If i'm some distance off and try to close using the fob the indicators flash and that shows it is receiving the signal, but won't close the boot.

Yeah this is exactly how mine works

Same as mine, must use the key sense to know the keys are within a certain distance, wonder if you left the spare key in the car and tried from a greater distance if it worked as the key fob works over a greater distance as we know, just to test the theory.

Mine is the same, also, with a trailer attached it will only open from the tailgate switch, I presume that this is a 'safety' feature.

Correct. Just in case something on the trailer could come in contact with the boot when it opens.

This is a silly feature

So I'm currently sat in my car and I can open with button on the drivers door but no longer close it as I did with my previous car.

Same with the fob, I can press and hold to open but I then have to get out to close it by pressing and holding the button

Works on mine, MY20 R Line Tech.
Pull up the button and hold in place til its completely shut.

Button on drivers door opens and closes my tailgate door but note the ignition must be switched on when closing but not necessary for opening.
