Hi. Does the Tiguan Coasting Function only work when car is in Eco Mode? Even when I try and adapt the Individual mode I cannot get the coasting function to work, any ideas?

I have also found a small gotcha - Put it in eco and coasting works. Come to car next day and drive off, car is still in eco mode (screen says so) but coasting will not work until you switch out of eco and then back in again. No idea why.

Fraid so. it's 'feature'.
my 4Motion DSG has a mode button by the gear selector, I press that, then ECO and it's back in Eco mode proper then

Thats really weird - On one hand they force you have to stop-start on every time you start the engine, and the other hand they force you to turn eco off and on again to get eco. Someone at VW really need to talk to people to fins out actually how people use their cars.

There's probably a way of coding it to stay on, but as mine is a lease and no guarantee of getting a VAG next time round I won't be investing in the necessary kit.
But you're right, why do you have to re-enable it every time you start up?
First world problems I know :D :D :D

The problem with coding stuff is that when the car is serviced there is a good chance they will reset all the changes made, so you'd have to do them all again anyway. ;)

I believe it has to turn on stop-start by law (the nice lady at the BMW garage was telling me) and in the future they are expecting the law to change so you can't turn it off.

Nah, not really, its unlikely your car will go near a computer during servicing unless you report a problem that has a known software fix, then its a warranty claim for the garage. Even then, they generally only reprogramme the affected module.
Otherwise, they dont plug your car in at all.

I actually do end up turning stop-start on and off. Off normally, but when approaching traffic light where I know I will be stopped for a while I turn it back on again. The button however is in about the most inconvenient place.

I wonder if you can map one of the buttons on the steering wheel to do the same, say the voice command button which I never use.

HI Guys

I have a question about eco mode and coasting - when changing to eco mode - no issues - coasting works.

But when starting the car up again - its starts in eco, but the car will not coast at all. I have to change the mode back to normal and then back to eco to get coasting to work. Is this correct ??

Cheers

Apparently its an odd design decision by VW. No idea why. Maybe they don't want people to be caught out with unexpected coasting when they expected engine braking.

OK I tried my Rline out just now and share what mine does.

Driving along in normal drive I put it into eco, take foot off accelerator and it coasts. Foot on accelerator or brake and it stays in eco without coasting. Take foot off accelerator and back to coasting in eco.
Stop the car in eco and switch off, take key out and open and shut door. Start car again and car has remained in eco, driving away and taking foot off accelerator, it's coasting.

Seems to be functioning as I would expect.
Perhaps you need to request dealer to take a look.

You appear to be in the minority hantshog
Everyone who has commented here has said the same thing. After getting back in and starting the car again we have to re-select Eco in order to get it coasting again.

There is clearly some difference in how Eco setting works on the forum members cars.
I have a 2016 build 150 TDi DSG SE Nav 4motiom. Yesterday I switched off with Eco mode as last setting, left the car locked overnight, on restarting this morning, Eco was still set and coasting was available on driving off once over20kph without having to reselect the driving mode to Eco, as found by hantshog.
Is it possible that early cars worked this way, but somehow later ones don't coast without an Eco mode reselect?

Same here. Coasting works when you actively set Eco, but not when you restart, even if the car is in Eco.

Biggest irritation for me is that coasting doesn't work in Individual mode, even when drive mode within Individual is set to Eco, so it effectively renders the individual mode useless if, like me, you like coasting (to lower the engine noise).

And don't get me started on the useless driver modes, which have a mind of their own, even though my wife and I never swap keys and I set it up precisely according to the handbook. What could have been a fantastic feature for us is, I have to say, becoming quite a frustration.

As an aside, I have to say that the performance of our 190PS is very disappointing and in Eco mode is bordering on lethargic. The 240PS wasn't an option (besides, I wouldn't chose a VW Tiguan if spending that sort of money), but it feels slower than our old shape 140PS Tiguan, until you select Sport mode, which I don't like doing as it holds the revs and gears far too long.

I have a 2018 and the Eco mode must be set every time I start the car, for it to work properly that is. I hadn't actually tried the coasting function till now and must say that I found it quite uncomfortable. Thought that the character of the car and gearbox felt much worse and I didn't like the way the car picked up the revs again after the coasting had been activated, or the way the car didn't have a natural engine breaking feel to it on steeper hills. Maybe this is just something to get used to. Also found the gear changing when re-starting the car in Eco mode (not full Eco) to be much better for my driving style.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I want the opposite. With everything set on normal mode, my car coasts and the eco logo appears when going down hills with your feet off the pedals. I don't want it to coast and I cant find out how to turn it off. Can someone save me half an hour of manual reading? I have a 2 week old 150bhp r line with dsg.

The coasting function is turned off at every start. This is due to safety... allegedly. If someone drives off not expecting it to coast it might come as a surprise and create a dangerous situation.

Do you have 4wd or 2wd? I've got a 2wd MY19 1.5 dsg and it seems that coasting is always available when some conditions are met. I think it needs to be slight downhill but I haven't noticed of it is activated when ACC is on or not. Anyway it doesn't bother me , just I think it behaves slightly differently than what is mentioned in previous posts. I don't have driving mode selector.

4Motion DSG here albeit with a 14 Tsi Petrol lump SE Nav
Without touching anything my Tig starts in D mode and will not coast
I have to engage Eco mode for it to coast (and the D changes to E on the Dash)
Same thing happens every time I start the engine, it goes back to D
Unless something different is possible with the R-Line , then i'd go back to the dealer and ask what's occurring

It won't coast every time I lift of the accelerator like in eco but mine will coast in normal and individual. I've never had sport selected for long enough to try it in that profile.

It does get annoying having to dab the brakes to keep within the speed limit when engine braking would suffice.
