Has your Tiguan Suffered from DSG Failure

You can ring VWFS to stop a current agreement and start a new one - I did it to take advantage of the 20% off deals for the second time

So, am I correct in thinking that on a 3 or 4 year old car, it is worth checking that the previous owner had the extended warranty to cover the DSG?

You can, I did too, but as I posted at the time, they claimed I hadn’t had a warranty in the last 30 days and said I couldn’t make a claim in the first 30 days. VWFS blamed the dealer, the dealer blamed VWFS and round and round it went. Luckily all was still well for that 30 days but be prepared for it to happen if you go down that route.

Taking out the “All-In” VW extended warranty and service package does not require previous continuous extended warranty. There was a dealer inspection the first time I took out the All-In package, not the second time. I think they may have dropped this - you are effectively buying an insurance policy. Normally VWFS have discount offers on the packages of around 20% twice a year which make the numbers stack up with the dealer service package. Do a search on here and you see the normal timings. VW not doing so well so don’t know if that will change things.

Was never offered an All in Warranty at 3 years with the supplying deale, but 9 months later took out the all in one online
Just needed my reg number and I assume an electronic search for service history and it’s been in place since.
Took it out because of the issues that surround the mechatronics

After my second service, I took out a service plan with my dealer. When the warranty expired I just took a warranty extension out and will continue to do so. The reported Mechatronics issues make it worthwhile in my opinion.

Yeah but the law of Sod dictates you will only get a problem when the warranty has run out and in my case can no longer be extended 🙄
If that happens, we buy any car.
Along as they can do a three point turn and nothing is showing on the dash, that will be the way I would go

I called into my local garage this morning and he was just repairing a Haldex, he showed me the pump and it had a green jelly/goo in it which stopped it working...apparently this is the result of not changing the oil often enough....I wonder if it's the same problem with the DSG? the mech is on the side of the box and controls the gear shifting....just a thought?

We have a local independent, "VAG Specialist", and he was pretty adamant when I discussed this with him that most people's DSGs are fine as long as they get the oil changes per schedule. In his opinion, the majority of the failures come around when people skimp on that. Clearly there are people on this chat who have had a failure before even the first service was due, but he said he's serviced hundreds, probably thousands of VAG automatics, and out of the thousands of VAG cars on the roads, DSG failure is not especially frequent in his opinion - as long as the oil services are done scrupulously.

I watched a video of a guy with a DSG in pieces on the bench, admittedly is was a bigger R8 but basically the same principal, it really is a very complicated piece of engineering..as he said re-assembling was not for the faint hearted, there's no way to test it without refitting and the smallest 'O ring' gets twisted and you lose oil/hydraulic pressure and have to start all over again..he also said that the mechatronic controls the actuators that shift the gears using hydraulic oil pressure so clean oil is imperative to failure, there are magnets in the undercasing which will give a clue to wear.

I wonder if those on here that have had a failure can honestly tell us whether they had the DSG oil changed bang on time as per the VW schedule.

Indeed, but having watched the video, I think I would be inclined to change the oil in the DSG and the Haldex a lot sooner since it's relatively inexpensive to do so compared with a failure and it would give piece of mind.

I agree and more so if the car’s out of warranty!

Although, I believe that it is not necessary to have a vehicle serviced at a dealership to maintain warranty and hasn't been since 2003, provided quality filters and oils are used. So having the Oils changed by an independent garage more often can only be a good idea.

A reply for non believers.

Oil changes and filter changes have NOTHING to do with a Printed circuit board failure inside of the mechatronic unit.

The pcb failing is what causes the car to need a repair or replacement Mechatronic unit

Yep my Tiguan 2017 TSi petrol has a defect in mechatronics. Going to cost $5k+ to fix. The car skips gears 2, 4 and 6 and can't select reverse. It happens on long drives whilst going uphill, then gives a huge tilt of the car before the Emergency Mode turns on.

I've seen lots of post on forums and Facebook etc recently of DSG Tiguan's with the dreaded error on the screen saying either "don't drive", or gearbox in reduced mode (or something like that), and they all seem to eventually point to a failed Mechatronic unit in the gearbox. Obviously the amount of failures posted makes it look like it's an epidemic of failures, but taken against the number of Tiguan's sold, is still possibly quite small. Still, it's a bit worrying nonetheless even though the car is still in warranty.

However, nearly every screen shot I've seen of the dash error, seems to be on a diesel vehicle (I've yet to see one on a petrol unit). My question is, I'm sure this error has affected user on this forum as well, so thought we might get a sample size and see if there's a pattern developing with engine type and size ?

Anyone ?
Yes we’ve had serious problems with my daughters Tiguan. Think VW should call them in and repair at nil cost
