Has your Tiguan Suffered from DSG Failure

I've seen lots of post on forums and Facebook etc recently of DSG Tiguan's with the dreaded error on the screen saying either "don't drive", or gearbox in reduced mode (or something like that), and they all seem to eventually point to a failed Mechatronic unit in the gearbox. Obviously the amount of failures posted makes it look like it's an epidemic of failures, but taken against the number of Tiguan's sold, is still possibly quite small. Still, it's a bit worrying nonetheless even though the car is still in warranty.

However, nearly every screen shot I've seen of the dash error, seems to be on a diesel vehicle (I've yet to see one on a petrol unit). My question is, I'm sure this error has affected user on this forum as well, so thought we might get a sample size and see if there's a pattern developing with engine type and size ?

Anyone ?

No I haven't, but it was being investigated prior to me buying the Tig as friends of mine were having issues with there DSG although they did have older vehicles in the VW group
I took out the extra warranty after the 3 years was up as I am finding it difficult to work on my cars due to space even though I am able bodied to do so

Four days ago we also had a problem- the gearbox in emergency mode notification came on. VW quoted just over 1.6k for the "gearbox repair kit" and then confirmed it's mechatronic unit. We are no happy as our extended warranty just finished in Jan and we were planning to get a new cover, but none of the telephone advisors knew how to extend as it's different for cars over 6 years, so we left it to speak with the vw garage, as the car was booked for service and cambelt change in the mid of May. The mileage is only 51k, therefore we are quite disappointed with the expensive repair and no car for further 2 weeks. Tiguan diesel Estate, 2.0 TDi 190 4motion R-line

The increase of this fault with the mechatronics unit is concerning. They all seem to go around the late 40’s early 50,000 miles. @pa.paulina the fact your extended warranty ran out just before it went is horribly unlucky and Sod’s Law, I feel for you. As you have to pay, it may be worth your while going down the repair route from these guys as mentioned on here before. Will save you a lot. Keep us updated on what you decide and costs please.

My tig was on 63k miles when I sold it, the box performing perfectly. There are a number of variations of the DSG gearbox, maybe if people gave more information on their specific car this could be narrowed down to a version of DSG.

Mine was the DQ500 high torque version fitted to a 177 ps diesel 4 motion.

I have a 2020 VW Tiguan where I had a problem with the Megatronics. Exactly the same pattern of error messages etc which was initially cleared by computer then happened again and VW said the entire gear box required replacing. I lodged a formal complaint with VW given it is less than 4 yrs old, just out of warranty and low mileage (55k). VW came back and stated the issue was caused by my “Driving Style” - I am lodging a complaint with the South Africa Motor Vehicle Ombudsman. I had the megatronics replaced by a a gearbox specialist at 1/3 of the cost but am likely to sell the vehicle now. I find VWs feedback unacceptable. Driving Style?

It's happened to a few people, but considering the millions of DSG cars out there, and the hundreds of members on here with DSG'S it's not a major issue.

I agree with you totally on the VW position: A manual clutch you could cause issues driving badly, DSG totally down to the car, you just accelerate and brake, the car does all the gearchanges not you.

P.S. It's meCHatronics :)

Thank you. As you can see I am not a mechanical expert :) anyway have replaced the mechatronic plate and all seems fine now. Just irritated with VWs feedback that’s all.

I have a 2017 Tiguan with 38,000 miles on it and it's always fully serviced by VW but I had the Mechatronics failure last month after a few hundred mile drive with multiple gearbox errors (no reverse, no drive, alternate gears only available etc) but it was then OK after cooling down the next day. I took it to VW who charged me a ÂŁ120 diagnostic fee and confirmed the Mechatronics fault but luckily I'd taken out the All in plan at 6 years old and within 3 weeks it had all been repaired with a new ÂŁ2,000 mechatronics unit fitted and gearbox oil change FOC under my warranty and my ÂŁ120 refunded phew! Note - ensure you have the DSG oil changed at 40k miles otherwise you may not be covered under warranty!

My 2022, petrol 2 wheel drive all space Elegance has just broken its Mechatronics unit' 26000 miles and main dealer service normal city and rural driving and nothing hard and no towing.
Love the car and hopefully VWQ will ante up a hire car for the 2-3 weeks repair time estimated. Dunts the confidence in the car a bit but there are hundreds of thousands in use and I guess a few fail.

Just had my 5 year old 2019 R-Line Tech TSI 230 have mechatronic failure at 38,000 miles.

Had the "Gearbox in emergency mode - safe to drive on" message come up during a long trip with three even gears 2, 4 and 6 available. Gearbox would re-set after engine switched off for a period, with all gears available again for short trips, but would fail again in emergency mode during a longer drive.

Into dealer upon return who confirmed mechatronic failure. Have the 'All-In' package and replacement mechatronic unit confirmed by VW covered under warranty. Dealer advised to leave the car with them in case any further damage caused to gearbox by use which would potentially not be covered. Advised replacement mechatronic unit required to suit the specification of car and expected to be 3 weeks. They also need both keys to code with new gearbox control unit.

Recommend the "All-In" extended warranty package if your car is younger than 6 years.

Not wanting to miss out, now it’s my turn!

57,000 miles and “Gearbox in emergency mode, you can drive on”. Even gears only!

Stop/start of car was “resolving” the issue for about 25 miles before being back to square one with even gears only.

After several restarts, mechatronics unit decided that it would no longer be so generous and took away 4th and 6th leaving us with only 2nd gear.

P173500 clutch position sensor 1 electrical fault.

Problem is, we are nearly 700 miles from home in the Outer Hebrides!!
What a palaver in trying to get home.

So thanks VW for providing us with a car with an inherent problem straight out of the factory.
Luckily it’s in warranty so you can fix it and pay for it!!

I really hope the fix is permanent as it’s looking more like when as opposed to if this is going to happen and I know some will say they’ve had loads of DSG’s without problem but this box was new for this car in so much as it’s a wet clutch ( I believe!)

My nearest main stealer is quoting around ÂŁ3500 for a new mechatronics unit if warrantees don't accept the claim!
That seems rather more than others have quoted on here for the work by their main dealers?

I've also been advised that I may have to pay ÂŁ180 diagnostics (even though the AA have provided diagnostics to VW and I have also scanned it with my VCDS and the fault codes are right there stored in the car's computer).

Ideal, they should also refund the diagnostic fee.
May be worth voicing your concerns after the repair on a unit that isn’t really fit for purpose and you have lost faith in the brand
You might get a sweetener like a free full service

I just hope mine doesn’t go faulty, mine is 5 years old and only 22700 miles

Because of the posts regarding this problem, I voiced my concern to my local garage mechanic because I'm hoping to get an R line that would be out of warranty being '20 or 21, he said his dad has the same fault on his and because there are so many DSG's now, there are specialist companies that repair them for about ÂŁ350 and give a warranty, so not a big deal. He said it is important to change the oil regularly though.

My understanding of the VW “All-In” extended warranty and service plan is that it is available for cars up to 6 years old to enter the plan which gives you 2 years warranty which takes you to 8 years following registration of potential VW warranty cover. If you don’t pay to extend the warranty you are electing to take the risk.

You can, I did too, but as I posted at the time, they claimed I hadn’t had a warranty in the last 30 days and said I couldn’t make a claim in the first 30 days. VWFS blamed the dealer, the dealer blamed VWFS and round and round it went. Luckily all was still well for that 30 days but be prepared for it to happen if you go down that route.
