On my previous car, also a diesel, I fitted a K&N air filter (just the filter- not an airbox).
It seemed to provide better acceleration and responsiveness together with a small increase in mpg.
I must admit- since K&N state fitting one of their filters does not affect the manufacturers warranty- I am tempted to try one on the Tig.
Does anyone have experience of using these and thoughts on whether the VW engine might benefit?

My experience is that (on other cars), yes it might make a tiny difference (less than 1% I'm guessing), performance wise it really doesn't do much.
however, as its a bit more free flowing, you might hear 'whoosh' sound as it sucks in air, if you like that kinda sound, yes you will like it and 'sounds' faster.

maybe someone can confirm this?

I would always avoid filters that need to be oiled such as k and n as these can cause havoc with the air flow sensor by covering it in oil. I speak from experience with this. Your better off with a foam variant like ramair that doesn't need to be oiled.
