Keyless start - Driving car without key

Had this in reverse a long time ago, with my T-Cross. Wife had key in her handbag, I was driving. I dropped her off near the pub and was about to drive off to park when there was a message on the dash 'key not in vehicle' so yes it does warn you.

I've got a physical key and it has to be inserted to start the car and removed to lock it. Such a simple idea that has worked for me in every car I've owned for 54 years - yes, I know there used to be starting handles as well, I'm not that old! :p
But what is the point of keyless ignition and as VW like cost cutting why don't they go back to having keys again or is keyless actually cheaper to install?
Mostly a gimick, but handy as you never have to get your keys out. Misses keys haven't left her handbag for years :)
