Problems updating Sat Nav.

I recently bought a 2016 Tiguan SEL from my local VW dealer. When I enquired about the procedure for updating the Sat Nav I was sent a link to the Map updates website , but told that I would need to get myself a new SD card of higher capacity than the original one fitted - as the map updates were now bigger.
After looking at the download website and the instructions, I found that the update files were just a shade under 32Gb, so I bought a 64Gb card to make sure that it would still work if the next update happens to be just over 32Gb.
I found that the VW app for downloading the update is useless, as it breaks the update file into small chunks and reassembles them - but multiple download attempts all resulted in a corrupted update file. I finally used the Window 10 file download, which worked fine and has the benefit of downloads being re-startable if interrupted.
The update file downloaded after bot 4 hours(!!) and I was able to unpack the contents and copy to the SD card as per instructions, but I have not been able to get the system to update. The car either gives a message 'No softwware update found' or it just keep searching indefinitely. I have tried SD1 & SD2 and formatting the SD card to bot NTFS and exFAT as per instruction.
Can anyone give me any clues as to what the problem is, before I go back to the dealer?

MACH1, the main problem you have here is the SD card. The navigation system is designed to use a dedicated VW SD card and will not work with any other. Your dealer is at fault for not telling you that. There are plenty of threads on here about map updates, but the general thought is not to use VW’s app. Far better to download the required file from the download site, then use a program such as 7-Zip to unzip the downloaded file to a folder on your PC.

If you don’t expect to be travelling all over the world in your Tiguan, then you are far better just downloading one of the smaller versions which will fit on your existing VW card.

You first need to backup your existing VW SD card data to a folder on your PC in case you have a problem and need to restore it. Then you can delete the files on the VW SD card and copy your new unzipped map download to the root of the VW SD card. This should now work fine in SD1 in the car.
Good luck!

Hi Steve.
Thanks for this gem! I HAD seen a couple of items suggesting that 'Genuine VW' cards were needed - but as (I am 99% certain!) VW do not actually MAKE SD cards, I thought these had to be red herrings. I suspect that there may be some hidden read-only file on the genuine VW card - but who knows? I will certainly give your suggestion a try now, as backing up the existing VW card to a folder on my laptop is no problem.
The confusion I had originally, is that the VW card currently in the car (which I do not think has ever been updates) bears no resmblance to the contents of the Map update file, which has Mib 1 & Mib 2 flders and a metainfo2.txt file. I therefore have to assume that when a suitable update SD card is put into SD1 and the update initiated, that the contents are probably transferred to an SSD in the Sat Nav, and the appropriate map files are then written back to the SD card, overwriting the original contents.
I am now off to retrieve the card from the car and to give your suggestion a try. Keeping fingers crossed as if this goes pear-shaped, I risk having a Sat NAv with NO maps - rather than just ones that are out of date. Thanks for the help.

Hi, i ve just done my map update yesterday by using the link shown in Essjays post abovd. Once i downloaded Discover Care (there are Windiws & Mac versions) i then put the VW SD Care in the reader selected Europe 1and it took me through thr complete process including doing a Back Up, verifying etc,. Who process to about 2 hours. I then put the VW SD Card into slot 1 in the car and hey presto all fine. The space used on the card was 27. When you log onto the link dont forget to select your model and year. Hope it all works for you. Good luck

I have updated twice now (not to the latest version) and if you have android auto I would use google maps as the speed limits are out and the 2 updates havent corrected this, als this was mentioned in another thread, I did ask vw customer service and they told me to contact my local vw !! obviously it will/should update any new roads but not the speed

I think I have got to the bottom of the "Genuine VW SD card" issue. There have been suggestions regarding hidden files or partitions, but I have checked the VW card for these and am 99% certain that none exist.

What I have noticed is that when viewed using Windows File Explorer, the VW card (16Gb nominal) reports a disk size of 14.8Gb, whereas a high grade Class 10 Sandisk card is reporting 14.6 after formatting.

I strongly suspect that VAG have used a B*****d formatting system to alter the onboard controller on their cards to indicate that it is slightly larger capacity than 16Gb (perhaps 16.6Gb). All media have more space on them that the rated space in ordeer to allow for formatting and reformatting with the inevitable imperfections the cards contain. Incidentally, this trick is the same as that used by counterfeiting operations to reprogram (say) 4Gb cards to appear to be 32Gb. In the case of the rogue cards, these almost invariably fail, as the media quality is not good enough to enable the extra space to be formated reliably. VW however, use very good quality cards - so a minimal increase in the capacity is no problem. All the car system has to do is check if the SD card has the bigger total volume - if not, they don't work! A bit of a nuisance, as it ties owners to cards for which VW can charge what they like - but nonetheless a clever way of capturing the market!:)

I've done a download but my car seems to be struggling to update,

I have discover pro and just bought a new card as this is the first time im going to update

My card reads Mib 1, Mib 2, metainfo2
then under Mib2 which i believe my unit is follows
NavDB, SpeechResVDE, Truffles
and then in each folder follows country, 0, default

Does anyone have any idea where im going wrong

Thanks in advance

Just out of interest, when was your car registered? I had constant failures trying to update my sat nav so I went back to the dealer to query the matter with them. I had downloaded the map update using Windows 10 and had printed out and followed the instructions from the manual downloaded from Discover Pro. Like you I ended up with folders Mib1 & Mib2 and the metainfo.txt file.

When I showed the service manager the VW instruction book he was confused! It turns out that our car is a 2017 car with 2016 plates! Interestingly the "brains" behind the sat nav is totally different from the earlier 2016 cars even though the displays is identical (so there is no obvious way to tell them apart). Not surprisingly, the update files needed for our car are totally different from the ones I had been working with (as identified by the Discover Pro software).

I now know that when I update the system in future I need to download the update for the 2017 car even though ours was registered in 2016. I just wondered if you may possibly have the same situation by any chance.

Good luck!
