Hello , new to Tiguan ownership and needed to have a retrofit tow bar fitted along with a reversing camera. Agreed to have them fitted last week at a specialist. The fitting had to be put back 24hrs as the supplier couldn`t get it delivered as the courier was having problems due to covid. Having settled down to wait with a good book in the waiting area the chap who was fitting the tow bar came in and asked me if I knew there was a tow bar on my car already!!!:oops::unsure::rolleyes:. I had no idea the car had a swivel tow bar as it was not on the list of extras on the service booklet supplied with the car or the description of the dealers advert.
Has anyone else come across this ? The car was first reg in 03/ 2016 but has obviously been built pre facelift that occurred in 2016. It is a Bluemotion match tech 2.0l diesel. It is black so the black cover on the top of the bumper didn`t raise any flags for me as it was intact and the small hole to prize it off to access the pull cord was untouched . The chap who " discovered" my faux pas thought the amount of thick rust on the tow ball could mean that the previous owner had never used the tow ball since new . The wesfalia cap on the ball was stuck initially by the amount of rust which lead him to think the tow ball had never been used .

Hi Tarquin
As you say the car is a 2016 Match, it must be a Mk1 and this forum is dedicated to the mk2
Best try www.mytiguan.com to see if someone there can assist 馃憤

The question isn't specifically a mk1 issue. This was not a standard fitment on any model, even the 'runout' mk1's. My guess this, like the mk1 I had was a cancelled order, showroom model, loads of goodies on it, sold as seen.

The original purchaser (and possibly the salesman) may not even have been aware or if he had, not interested in the option. Very fortuitous you wanted a towbar and got it free!

Thanks for your reply Tricky. Been wracking my brain to remember what the "Trade" call the pre-facelift models that are usually loaded with tech to make them more saleable.:). The other fortuitous addition are the side steps that I would have on any SUV as we are in our 70s . Also the Discovery PQ infotainment I believe was top of the range in 2015/16.

I had a Touareg with same problem i.e undeclared towbar which was obviously missed on the inventory!

Yes up until mine (mid 2015) it had the older RNS head units. The discovery head unit in yours came in as an interim. They had the look and functionality of the new discovery units, but were assembled as a single unit with the control logic behind the screen to fit the existing dash. The equivalent models that had appeared in the Golf and Polo the control logic was the same as the mk2 tig, behind the glove box.

Don't know about the mk1, but my mk2 has an electric-release tab/switch in L/side boot panel near the torch, there is just a blank panel there if no tow bar.

Mk1's had a pull cord in a recess on top the bumper, accessible with the boot open. Mk2's had the luxury electric release.
