Data plug

Post by leehal » Thu Feb 13, 2020 9:34 pm

Just received my new Tiguan today (upgrade from an SE Nav), on my old car I had a data plug, when I went to plug in Carista I noticed there was no data plug in the car. Do I need this in a R Line Tech or is it built in?

I’ve ordered a data sim and single to use car net and I’m hoping to set that up over the weekend, not sure if that would do the same as a data plug information wise?

Loving the car so far, I had reservations about the ride being firm, haven’t been too far yet but with the DCC set to comfort its a smoother ride than my old car, exactly what I wanted when I took that option.

It’s all built in on the R. The SOS unit (green light above rear view mirror unit) is always on and communicates with the we-connect app.
The wingle is for the car-net functions such as live traffic and fuel stations prices.

Data plugs used to be free ( for the we connect GO app) VW now charge £30 for them so I just kept the one from my last car, as Macbeth says, the sos and we connect is taken care of by the built in sim but if you still want to do the challenges etc, use a dataplug

Also, I’ve heard of folk using the dataplug with some of the obd apps like torque etc but I could never get that to work and used an obd11 dongle for 3rd party apps

With it being built in, does this mean the OBD port is now free? Free from a Data Plug?

we connect is the newer one, it speaks to the car via the cars inbuilt sim and handles the data that way, we connect GO is the older one with various challenges and points to collect, it uses the dataplug for the info via a bluetooth connection to your phone so it also suits cars without the inbuilt sim....the challenges are, quite frankly pish ! as for the tig,.... you probably don't need a data plug

Not exactly true. We connect is indeed the newer version of the app, but this is also used to connect with the data plug. When it's working, it provides some usuful data and can also be used for trip tracking and as a refuelling log (like fuelio, sprintmonitor etc)
