Looking to buy a Tiguan to tow and use off road

Post by Susiew » Thu Mar 14, 2019 1:05 pm

Hi everyone I'm currently looking to trade in my landrover as I'm sick of big bills on such a low mileage vehicle .. I am considering the 150 dsg diesel Tiguan as they appear to have the best towing capacity of any vehicle of its size ... I am looking to tow a horse trailer usually just one horse so combined weight of 1600 but occasionally both so that would be 2100kg. I also used my vehicle to drive over (flat ) fields with water and pulling chain harrows ..

Has anyone used their vehicle in this way ?
Tia

  Don't get me wrong, the Tiguan is quite a capable beast for it's size but mine is brand new and it'll be a while before I even mount a kerb :D but as this is a MK2 Tiguan forum starting at MY2016 I'm not sure if many if any will have done anything like you describe, I might be wrong though, I often am

Although the spec'n states 2300/2500 kg towing limit, two horses in a trailer weighing 2100kg in total sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me, but thats only my opinion. One horse fine at 1600kg.

If you still think its OK weight wise based on your previous experiences with the Landrover, personally I would want the 190 rather than the 150.

Which Landrover do you tow with at present?

Thanks it's only a freelander and that only has a 2000kg capacity . It's fine with one but on the only occasion I've taken the 2 it went ok but that was a straight flat run. I certainly wouldn't make have made habit of it . Just not sure the Tiguan would cope off road as I do drive round the fields a bit .

I volunteer with a Ramblers work party and often tow across fields. I have not towed yet with my mk2 but have crossed fields. My mk1 coped well with towing across fields with heavy loads. Not as good as a friend's Discovery but I would expect as good as a freelander I also used a pair of snow socks to get me out of trouble with the mk1.

I believe the Freelander is about 200kg heavier than the Tiguan and more suitably built for your needs. For similar money, I would be looking at something heavier such as the Nissan Navaro or similar.

I would prefer ford ranger or toyota hilux for that purpose.

SusieW ... The Tiguan is quite capable of going off road and is an excellent caravan puller, I would not consider it as a 'Workhorse' it's a comfortable Motorway Cruiser with pulling and off road capabilities suitable to caravaners or people who live in the wilds of the British countryside, or even a seaside towny like me. it sounds to me that the LR Discovery MK4 is the car most suited to your needs, NOT a MK5, That is just a Tiguan look alike for £10k more without the reliability.

What maximum ball weight are you allowed on the Tiguan in the UK. There has been a bit of robust discussion in Australia over this point and VWA have recently changed the tow bar capacity because it was so low.
