Diesel or Petrol Help!

Post by LesLeather » Tue May 04, 2021 7:58 am

Hi Everyone.
So I decided to Update my Tiggy to a newer model. Went to a dealership nearby. They have 2 Tiguans both identical apart from the Engine 2.0 tdi or 1.4 petrol.
My requirements are pretty simple. I like reliability of course. I'm retired and cover maybe 7k miles a year mostly local but every couple years drive from UK to Spain and Portugal.

Can anyone offer advise on which Tiguan I should buy? Diesel or Petrol.?..

I should add. The Diesel has covered 24k miles. The Petrol 11K miles. Same year 2018. Cost virtually the same.
Thanks in advance

Hi there.
Doing 7k local miles a year petrol is the obvious choice. No potential DPF issues. as has often been said here, you really need to be doing lots of miles to justify a diesel, unless you need the torque. Having said that I've just moved from a 2.0 150 TDI to a 1.5 150 TSI petrol ( I do about 10k a year) and can honestly say I'm perfectly happy. Consumption is down (inevitably) but petrol is cheaper, power is the same - plenty enough oomph, although low down torque not quite the same as the oil burner and it's a 15.TSI not a 1.4). And the petrol is much smoother and quieter.
If you're only doing the abroad trip every couple of years, frankly I'd take that out of the equation. But maybe test drive both?

Having previously had a 1.4 and now in a 2.0 TDi I can honestly say the difference is not huge.
The only reason I went diesel is due to the price of the lease I was offered. I couldn't say no.
The petrol is definitely smoother and more refined around town and only gets a tiny bit shouty when pushed. Economy isn't so bad as long as its a 2wd and not 4Motion. Mine was 4Motion and economy around town wasn't at all impressive. I was lucky to get 40Mpg on a run.
The diesel power delivery is more linear (no noticable lurches between gearshifts) when getting up to motorway speed, and the low down trque is great when fully loaded. Gets nearer to 50Mpg on a run.
Personally if I were buying (not leasing) i'd go Petrol. It's a cracking engine that 1.4

The 1.4/1.5 TSI 150 engines are very economical for their power and size. Will get within 15% of the diesel for fuelling costs I reckon.

With the amount of mileage your doing, I would certainly opt for Petrol over the oil burner.

To put it simply - TSI.

I still don't quite get the fixation with Diesel engines. As mentioned above, unless you have specific requirements for high mileage or low down torque for towing, then its TSI all the way.

If your doing low mileage levels annually anyway, the mpg delta between the two engines wont matter much as the actual pounds saved will be fairly minimal (few hundred quid), and your DPF maintenance issues with a TDI will probably offset any pennies you save at the bowser. The savings difference obviously grows as the mileage increases, which then pushes you in favour of the Diesel engine.

Good luck. To be honest it'll probably come down to which colour you prefer :)

I’d go petrol for all the reasons everyone has already said. Diesel still makes sense if you’re towing or doing big mileages but otherwise you’re best with petrol.

Do check that it’s the 150ps version of the 1.4 engine though. I believe VW also put a lower powered 130ps (or was it 125?) version of the same engine in some models.

You definitely want the 150.

Good point. Check it's a 150ps version.
