Hello GTD184,
Yes my car is a 150 4motion dsg model. I have made a video and sent it to the dealer. However the sound quality wasnt the best so I will have to try again. Still no luck getting VW to take a look at your car?

Hi guys, had a thorough investigation with VW Singapore yesterday. They finally jacked up my car to diagnose the jerking gearbox that causes the rattle... they jacked up another similar Tiguan for comparison. When u accelerate lightly the gearbox jerks and causes the rattle. Happens on the other brand new Tiguan as well. In fact just by using your hands to rotate the wheels manually u can see the gearbox jerking on both vehicles. The product specialist explained that this vehicle was designed this way to allow for margin when off roading that’s why there’s a bigger void surrounding the gearbox area that allows the rattle and jerk. So basically it’s not a 4motion problem as their 4motion sedans like the new arteon or golf R doesn’t have this jerk. It’s a trade off for off-roading and thus giving the mount more space since this car was designed for harsh terrains as well.. of course I stuck to my view that this trade off is not a good balance as the cabin comfort is greatly affected by the noise and rattle. And I told them that many are unhappy with this “characteristic”. So now the case is going to be escalated to Germany for a further investigation to see if they can do anything about this. I doubt that will happen unless more people complain about it. I told them that in the morning when my car is cold and the gearbox doesn’t jerk so even with the margin and void surrounding the gearbox wouldn’t be an issue so maybe it could be the gearbox issue jerking by itself.. spoke to some local mechanics and they suggest that there could be an easy fix for this but installing something called a Transmission Mount Insert to stiffen the mount and also reduce the jerk and rattle. What are your views guys?

All this about the rattling gearboxes plus having drove two demonstratorsn an SEL and R line and the R line had the rattling is making it even harder to think about getting a dsg plus having driven a manual I'm 90% sure I'm going to get a manual but it's just a pain they don't do the 190bhp manual.

When the service guy said about the transmission mount did he mean a dogbone bush? If so then I wouldn't advise putting one on a diesel because of the vibration.
Waiting on my new R line in tungsten silver with keyless, electric boot, rear camera and DCC

I wonder if there are different mounts for different cars and the higher powered vehicles get a stiffer mount. My 162kw car does not do it and it has to climb a very steep and long driveway from cold every time it is started and does not behave any differently to when hot. It would not surprise to find that the higher powered cars like mine and both the two more powerful diesels have different mounts to control the torque of the motors. Mine appears to get a bit of drive line shunt shifting back into second gear sometimes but not often and certainly not often enough to or predictably enough to cause any concern.

Mine does this as well, but as you say not too concerned about it although I will log it with the dealer at service time

Hi GTD184

My 190 TDi 4 motion makes the same noise, have done 4,000 miles since new in Feb18. I wondered if you had resolved the issue and if so what it was diagnosed as being wrong?

Thanks.

No diagnosis because I haven't pushed it. I know what the problem is, the gearbox mapping is holding onto third gear longer than it should, just like in a manual car when you don't change down early enough.
