2.0tdi 2017 Wont start

Post by Mixtu » Fri Mar 02, 2018 2:25 pm

As the title says I have an r-line 2.0tdi 2017 4motion DSG. On three separate occasions now it has failed to start. I tried it numerous times on each occurrence and nothing. The Starter motor turns over but the engine does not fire up. Battery, fuel and all other obvious reasons have been eliminated.

Leave it for 30 mins and then its starts no problem!

Main dealer is puzzled by whats happened.

Has anyone else experienced this.

Mine sometimes randomly turns over a few times before starting for no obvious reason. It hasn't caused me any issues though so I haven't taken any action

I've had this twice..... I've also had numerous slow starts where it turns over for longer than normal, normally in the cold

Sorry if this is telling you what you already know, but are you aware of the purpose of glow plugs?

Diesel explodes with sufficient heat and pressure. If the engine is cold this becomes more difficult. The engine has glow plugs in each cylinder that are basically electric heaters. When it's cold turn on ignition but wait a few seconds before turning over. This gives the cylinders time to warm up. There's a light on the dash with a coil symbol which shows the glow plugs are on.

You should have blue motion, so when you turn the key you don't engage the starter motor, you tell the start circuits to do it. By holding the key you override this and try to force the engine to start before its ready.

What I do is foot on brake, flick the key round to start and let go, leave key alone and put your belt on keeping your foot on the brake, by this time the glow plugs have done their stuff, the start logic detects this and the car will start by itself without any further action.

Interesting post tricky. Thanks for the knowledge I will keep it in mind. I don’t think it is the glow plugs as I have tried to start it, it’s failed left key in on position tried again and nothing. Repeated this multiple times. Left it 30 mins then it starts. Very strange. Ambient temp was 12degrees last time it happened.

Had the same problem once. Sent it to dealer, they told me it was fuel pressure sensor. They fixed that and they screwed more stuff.

Fingers crossed it solves the issue but it is a worry for us Diesel owners.

Seems as though I'm affected by the same issue, but on my 2016 2.0 TDi 4 Motion DSG SEL.

I've been aware for a while now of an occasional unhealthy sounding start to the car intermittently but had largely dismissed it as just a characteristic of the engine.

Just the other day, I was nipping out to the shops and the car just would not start for the life of me. Key in, flick it to start and let go of the key and it would just crank and crank to no avail before I'd shut it off. I was sat on the drive for a good 25 minutes in-between checking google for ideas, trying to start the car again, turning electrical bits and bobs off, before it just decided to finally fire up randomly during one of my attempts.

Managed to catch it all on my dashcam. Stuck a cropped 1min 30 clip on Youtube so I could share with the dealership when they finally slot me in. Was told a month long wait when I called today.

Does anyone know? When you car is fitted with keyless entry and start, is there still a coil symbol on the dash to let you know the glow plugs have warmed? I was under the impression that you just got in and pressed the start button?
