Can you not pair the watch to the phone, and then connect to Carplay?
Thought the whole point was for messages to be displayed using Carplay and an iPhone

The problem is that technically Carplay is not an app, therefore the watch doesn’t recognise it as such, as the watch can only get notifications from an app, be it a built in app or a downloaded one. There is no provision in the watch section of the iphone to allow it to interact with Carplay.
It’s probably a good thing really as there would probably be too many notifications for things such as navigation instructions etc, which, if you’re getting them on Carplay then why have them on the watch as well?
However if you’re iphone is connected to Carplay it doesn’t stop the Apple Watch from getting notifications from any apps that it would normally get them from.
