Damage on delivery

Post by dbRLine » Tue Sep 10, 2019 5:34 pm

My new Tiguan R-Line Tech has been delivered at the main dealer today. However, in transit (car transporter) it has received some bodywork damage to the rear spoiler, boot and roof due to impact with a tree.

I am now awaiting the dealer to speak to VW and sort out getting the repair approved and then order parts and repair. They estimate this to be 1-2 weeks. The original planned handover was yesterday so we are a few days behind schedule.

I am disappointed in that I have paid for a new car and will be essentially getting a product which is not really brand new and will have touch up repairs conducted.

I guess initially I have a few options. Reject the vehicle and ask for new albeit with a likely long delay for manufacture, look for an alternative new or nearly new model, accept the vehicle albeit with confirmation that this will not cause any detrimental value loss on the vehicle. What are thoughts and has anyone been in a similar experience?

Hi,
Oh no how annoying. If the damage is localised and limited to paint work then I’d accept a repair subject to some form of compensation.
Keep us posted.

Like you I'd definitely be disappointed, but I'd get them to fix the car to a 'as new undamaged' condition and be asking for some money off / compensation in some form - for the extended delivery delay and damage/hassle involved - if you loved the car pre-damage it's the same car really.

Look at it this way, you could of took delivery of a perfect pristine car, stopped off somewhere on the way home and either had a small bump etc or returned to the car after someone's opened their door and hit a side panel.

Gotta think positively man 👍

I agree with Captain Midnight.

Get them to repair it to an acceptable standard that YOU deem then screw the arse out of them for freebies and visits.

If you haven't already, I'd be asking for 3 years worth of free servicing and the first MOT, some rubber mats and boot mat plus a lovely big bunch of flowers for your other half who is massively disappointed.

If you don't get any of that then write to the dealer principle but be nice and you never know.

Had to have the boot of our golf mk 7 resprayed as it was scratched on delivery, they attempted to polish it out but made it worse. I got £500 compensation. They did make a good job on deep black pearl and I got all the paperwork to say it would have same paint warranty as the rest of the car. I didn’t have the choice of rejection cos had already sold the car it replaced. I think with white you’ll never notice and you’ll get some freebies as well.

I was thinking £500 plus some freebies. I’m not sure what discount you secured but the dealers have up to 11% to play with and the they’ll be their insurance and likely central VW assistance. Just don’t be fobbed off.

I wouldn't expect too much from the dealer, it wasn't their fault after all. They may claim from the transport company or leave it for VW UK to sort out. I would let them fix it, it looks very minor so shouldn't require much work.

Thanks all for your input. I will liaise with the dealer and get written confirmation that the repair will be "as new" standard and the warranty will be to the original bodywork warranty for the vehicle. The delivery cost of the vehicle looks to be around £635 inc VAT so perhaps this could be a good starting point. I got the Service Plan (first two services) included and believe the R-Line includes floor mats. I guess potential of extending the warranty for an extra year or paint protection coating could be worth asking for. I understand it is probably something more to complain back to VW so will see what information the dealer can provide with regards to this route.

Looking around there is a potential of an VW approved vehicle to the same spec (with extra side scan) with 3k miles and registered in July (19 plate) within 50 miles of me with a price which would be a few thousand lower than going the brand new route I have taken should it be required.

Agree with comments that some sort of compensation should be paid, maybe some sort of freebie on service or gap insurance or similar.

Good luck and keep us posted.

You’d be amazed how many new cars get damaged in transit and repaired before collection, the owners would have no idea.....
