Sat nav - any good?

Post by leehal » Thu Feb 13, 2020 9:39 pm

What are peoples thoughts on the built in sat nav?

I previously used Tomtom on car play on my last car, however on my new car with the ability to use the AID to display the sat nav I’m thinking about using it.

Any feedback on accuracy, traffic data etc? I’ve used Tomtom for years and not sure if I’ll be disappointed with the VW sat nav.

Desperate to go for a long drive to test it out but busy at work and the forecast for the weekend is awful again :|

I find it all good apart from some speed limits on latest maps seem to be wrong so still running on the
maps that came with the car.

Sat nav works fine for me and I drive to the speed limit advertised on the road so who cares what the sat nav says as long as the route to your destination is correct?

Worth adding all the speed cameras to the built in map. , I only use other ( google) if I want a satellites view to my maps. Also easy to update the onboard maps with discover care. Currently running 20/21 map data

I used it from Epsom to Folkestone, then Calais to Disneyland Paris last week, then reverse journey and works a treat.

As far as speed camera etc I use TomTom AmiGO or Waze apps on my phone.

CarPlay and Waze a million times better than the built in nav.

I prefer the built in nav to AA, but both have their uses.

I've also added speed cameras to it from a link on this site, apart from the speed limits being incorrect on some roads its not a problem, besides i have speed sign camera system on my car.

I've also used a factory fitted Tomtom nav in a Mazda for two years and didn't rate it to be honest, or the replacement system they fitted, the VW version is much better IMO and uses the same HERE mapping as the Mazda.

With the built in nav I can set up routes at home for all my planned trips well in advance, mainly for my towing trips where its important to select the correct roads.

I did use AA last week to get home from a garden centre and the bloody thing sent me down 5 mile of single roads, not impressed.

The only criticism I have about the VW Nav is there’s nothing on the screen to tell you the name or number of the road you are currently travelling on. I don’t mean on the map, I mean a separate bar at the top or bottom of the screen.
Other than that it’s been okay on the handful of times that I’ve used it. I will admit though, if I’m going on a long journey I usually use Waze via CarPlay, purely for the live speed camera and Police notifications.
