Morning all,

I'm currently browsing for what tyres to get for SWMBO's 2018 Tiguan R-Line, however getting a bit confused with regards to sizing. I am fairly sure she has 235/45R20 fitted at the moment, however most topics and posts I see discussing the subject talk about using 255/40R20 size tyres. Can these generally be fitted to the same wheels (using some of the extra width to stretch round into the sidewall?

Specifically I see Michelin CrossClimates being raved for the Tiguan but they don't seem to be available in the 235/45R20 size.

Thanks in advance!

Correct size for the R-Line on standard Suzuka wheels is 255/40 R20 (definitely not 235/45 R20 unless aftermarket wheels have been fitted).

I think online tyre sites must be getting confused then as that's where I got the 235/45R20 size from (not at home this weekend now to check the actual tyres). Glad I told her to hold off buying from Blackcircles now!

Tyre size 235/45/R20 is the size of the 20" Miramar wheel which is an option on the SEL model. A lot of those with an R-Line (R-Line Tech) have found that our cars were registered with the DVLA as SEL models instead of R-Line (R-Line Tech) (there is at least one large thread on this) and this has been a big problem for many of us to resolve.

However, once that has been addressed and your car is now correctly registered with DVLA, many web sites that provide spares (including tyres) and insurance where you identify your car by its reg number, will still quote based on your car being an SEL model (updating the DVLA doesn't update many/most sites). It is important for those affected to check if buying anything where your car is identified just by its reg number. If this applies in your case, it might explain why you have the wrong wheel size?

I hope that helps.

The registration problem John27 above refers to has been discussed at length, if you own the car you might want to read this and get it registered correctly with DVLA, and also make sure the insurance you have for the car is correct.

My Tiguan was registered as a R Line Tech but as a diesel initially in its description.
However, if I put my reg in, it comes back as 235/45/20 tyres fitted.
Can’t see anything on my reg document that has SEL mentioned

Don't rely on the Reg for anything.
My R line comes back with both tyre sizes depending on what tyre fitter you're looking at.
As tamma says, best bet is to see what's fitted and buy the same. But to be clear it is definitely 255s on the R line Suzukas

Oh, I definitely never thought of that....

I was away from home this weekend - as mentioned on my previous post.

Useful info John - thanks for that. I’ve checked her V5 tonight and thankfully it’s showing the correct model on there.
