2021 R line infotainment 8"

Post by Avi268 » Tue Feb 09, 2021 6:50 pm

Can anyone clarify if the standard 2021 8" unit comes with gesture control as I'm being given conflicting info.

Also, is there voice control as standard on this unit, and if so, what does the £200 voice option offer ?

Thanks in advance.

Voice control gives you

Spoken voice commands for telephone and navigation functions (when fitted). Not in conjunction with Discover Navigation Pro touch-screen navigation infotainment system

Thank you.

I've been told by one dealer that, as standard, it comes with voice control for nav, but the £200 option, extend this to controlling other things.

Same with gesture control, one dealer says to get this an upgrade to Discover pro is needed, and the other says it's now standard, which appear to be bourn out by the Carwow video review I watched.

Just trying to get a definitive answer before selecting options.

You best bet is to look on the 2021 Brochure as it lists what comes with the car and what's extra, link below,

https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/files/live ... t-p11d.pdf

It looks like gesture control is only with the Discover Navigation Pro only.

Discover Navigation Pro touch-screen navigation infotainment system including streaming and internet with integrated
voice activation, ‘Gesture Control’ and We Connect Plus preparation.

Yes, I've already looked at the 2021 brochure, which appears to be what some of the dealers are doing i.e. some don't have cars to go check !

This is one of a number of 2021 review videos that show the 8" (MIB 3?) display and at 2m49s you can see gesture in action. The Discover Pro is the unit without physical knobs, and is bigger i.e. 9"

When I bought my car two different dealers advised me that the voice control was not worth paying for....

Voice works well using AA but that's google for you.
I wouldn't bother with it myself but you can always have it upgraded after you buy it.

Cheers.

I'm really just trying to understand what I would get to set my expectation. My current car, which isn't a VW, has voice and it's really usefull on the move.

Trying to work out what's included or supported from the VW brochure is a challenge. Looking at the 2021 price list, neither of the infotainment options mentions AA or Carplay, so it's easy to assume these aren't supported either.

Our 2021 model Elegance has the latest 3rd gen Discover Media unit and yes, it does have gesture control - think this used to be exclusive to Discover Pro on earlier versions.

We do not have the voice control. The voice button (when held down) controls Apple Siri.

It comes with wireless Apple Carplay (and I assume Android Auto...no Android here to check)

Thank you for clarifying.

The wireless Carplay is a nice touch, it's just a pity the factory fit wireless charging pad is such an expensive option at £420, which more than the IQ lighting option! Where does VW get the prices?

I do think some of the pricing is all over the shop

On a value basis, I think the Elegance is great value with better standard kit than the updated R Line, whereas it was the reverse with the old SEL and R-Line
