FUEL CONSUMPTION WITH A 2020 SEL

I changed my 2018 SE Nav for an SEL in the middle of 2020. Both have on paper the same 150ps 2.0 diesel and both with the DSG box. The SE Nav would readily give 50mpg on medium length runs and around 60 on longer ones. With the SEL I'm lucky if I can get 44mpg. Most of the time it is in the 30's. A 220 mile run yesterday gave 36mpg. They must have changed the engine mapping because it feels much more responsive. Acceleration is better than the SE Nav and this probably explains the mpg difference. Maybe this is a result of removing the "cheating software". Anyone else notice this?

I don’t know about fuel consumption differences between the two different engines, I am however quite curious as to how you manage to do such long journeys during ‘lockdown’?

Not casting aspersions about your son (!) but some of this may be down to, shall we say, different driving styles.
The difference in consumption when my wife does the driving, whether in the Tig or our motorhome, is quite significant . . .

I always get more MPG than my wife, and I usually drive quicker??

Our R-Line is much thirstier than our old SE, both TDI 150 DSG. I put some/most of it down to the 18" vs 20" wheels (the 20" wheels are a lot wider too with 255 tyres and very heavy). I notice a big improvement on my AUDI A3 when I put my steel wheels on over winter (must be half the weight and narrower winter tyres).

There probably is an element of mapping involved too, ironically keeping emissions down uses more fuel.
