Faulty LED rear light

Post by AlexM » Thu Jun 13, 2019 5:38 pm

Happily driving along this morning and got a beep and check right rear tail light on the dash. I thought this was odd as the rear lights are LED’s as far as I know.

Looking at the back, the inner section (attached to boot) of the tail light is not lit. I opened up the inspection panel and water dropped out so looks like either a condensation or water ingress issue. Luckily the outer light still illuminates so at least have some tail lights.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Will get booked in to dealer to investigate - but annoying nonetheless.

Definitely something the Dealer should sort out.

I had the same thing, took a picture of the lens full of condensation. It went in and new light assembly fitted all under warranty. It did make some pretty patterns when the brake lights went on. No trouble since

Thanks, good to know. Have booked in dealer for Tuesday and they have already ordered the part. Good job the outer still working or would not be able to drive in the dark.

Just had a call that VW are rejecting the warranty claim. There is apparently damage to the back of the lights and they are saying that someone has managed to hit the car, only causing impact to the two inner rear lights without any other marks to the body work. Sounds like a pretty unlikely scenario but there we go - stranger things have happened I suppose.
Will have to find out how much to replace the lights and decide if I claim on insurance.

Have you had a look at the lights yourself? If so can you see any damage or cracks? Is it just one inner light that is out?

Yes and cracks were 100% internal with no external damage - no way they could have been hit. Dealer eventually agreed and have replaced - faith restored!
