Ford and Volkswagen to share technology

Post by Tricky » Sat Jul 13, 2019 9:40 am

Confirmed: Ford to share Volkswagen’s MEB platform for at least one electric car by 2023

I've seen this in several news sources, here's one article... https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/indu ... c-car-2023

I thought it interesting that it's VW's tech being shared, Ford obv seem them as front runners.

Maybe VW have a bigger budget or are already further down the research and development path than Ford and they see it as cheaper alternative to doing it themselves, or perhaps Ford just don't have the expertise right now. Either way it will be interesting to see how the technology develops.

With the electric car market costs it makes so much sense to share resources, if they want us all in electric cars they needs to get the costs down as no one really wants to pay 20 to 30k more for an decent electric version of what was once a petrol or Diesel car.

Seems like a solid decision to ensure both manufactures are around.

I'm sure BMW and Merc put out a similar statement a while back regarding their new tag team

Usual story of collaboration. We've seen it for years between manufacturers. I wonder how many Mercedes 180 diesel owners know their engines are built by Renault. It cuts development costs and cheaper to pay another manufacturer rather than develop in house. It works both ways, Ford have also been innovators historically.

My prediction, as mainstream manufacturers race to get electric cars to market innovators like Tesla will cease producing cars themselves and supply batteries etc to everyone else. Watch this space.

As will Dyson, last year they purchased a major organisation in the US which specialises in the latest battery technology https://venturebeat.com/2015/10/19/dyso ... tery-tech/

Dyson are also building their own electric vehicle to compete with Tesla, they have already spent £200 million on their new test track in Wiltshire.

I would imagine a car manufacturer(s) may well put in a bid for Tesla as they appear to be well ahead of the game but have never made a profit, but they certainly have technology that is worth a considerable amount to other manufacturers, so maybe Tesla will sell their technology.

I think that with the poor state of Ford europes finances the rumours of a bigger tie in with VW (ie the rumour of a joint transit sized van) are most likely.

As electric vehicles grow in popularity I think a few companies such as Bosch will design and license the floor/battery/motors/drive line and software and the car brands will put a body on it. Toyota have tie ups with Mazda, Subaru and BMW at the moment so it seems to be the industry trend.
