Towbar Fitting

Post by thejanners » Mon Dec 02, 2019 7:18 pm

I'm looking to have a towbar fitted (although I could do it myself) for a couple of mountain bikes and the odd trip to the tip with a trailer but have concerns over warranty.

VW do one for £761.50 fitted or £401.50 supply only (Part number 5NA092103B)

I can go for an aftermarket version with recommends in the South West (Close to Cornwall) but would appreciate any advice

You need to get some coding done so best to go VW and get them to install. Sounds a decent price. I paid way more than that for a retractable one.

Make sure they do the coding and don’t just install over ridding relays. The way to tell is that the rear reversing sensors don’t come on when hooked up to the trailer electrics and the car rear fog light won’t work either.

I've just had one fitted by a towbar fitter in Durham including coding. The towbar is detachable and all-in cost around £650. VW dealer wanted £1000!!

Thanks for the replies, one company has said they can fit and code for £450.00 but I cannot see how as it was an aftermarket towbar
May have to bite the bullet at the stealership

Another member on this forum had an aftermarket towbar fitted and had problems with VW afterwards, have a quick read as it may help you make a decision viewtopic.php?t=3220

I had an aftermarket towbar fitted and coded in May 2017 and have had no comment or problems from the dealership when it's been in for servicing. I've also had an aftermarket rear camera fitted and no problems with that either.

The problem may arise as every single new vehicle from VW has an individual code, so when the dealer plugs in the vehicle to their diagnostic equipment and it registers there is a software update for that particular vehicle, it knows the exact combination of standard and extra equipment that is fitted to that particular vehicle from new
.
The software update may or may not include modifications to one or several of the combinations your car has.

In the case highlighted above the vehicle was purchased new but without the factory fit towbar, so when a software update was available the VW identification code for that car shows no towbar was fitted from the factory and no software licence was subsequently purchased for that fitment. If the aftermarket fitment included the factory coding from VW then there is no problem, but if the aftermarket fitment did not include the factory coding then the problem may arise.
This can possibly affect the warranty if the aftermarket modification was deemed to have had an adverse affect on the warranted component.
If no software update is/was available for your vehicle then the problem would never arise.
