3rd Year Service Cost and PCP Service Obligation

Post by E-bee » Wed May 20, 2020 6:12 pm

Hi everyone,

This is the 1st vehicle we have had on PCP, the 1st and 2nd year services were done under a package that we bought when we purchased the car.

It is on a 4yr PCP and is now due its 3rd service (Minor) which is I think just oil and filter and I'm wondering what people are paying for this to get an idea of if what I'm being quoted is competitive?

Also, under a PCP agreement, what are my service obligations, do I have to have it serviced at a Main Dealer or can it be done at Independent Garage as long as it's VAT registered and uses Genuine Parts, and if it is done by an Independent does it affect the Guaranteed Future Value?

Asking those who are more experienced in this, as I say this is our 1st vehicle on PCP.

Thanks for any advice.

In theory any car still under the manufacturers warranty can be serviced at any independent garage provided they use genuine parts and they adhere to the VW servicing in order to maintain the warranty.

In reality that cannot happen as no one outside the VW dealer network has access to any of the latest software updates and/or service campaigns and recalls that your vehicle may require so to be safe only go to a VW dealer.

Although your Tiguan may be newer than 3 years old the VW website states £179 for a minor service for vehicles 3+ years and there is no difference to servicing a mk2 Tiguan that is newer or older than 3 years https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/pricing

You may find it cheaper to purchase another service plan for the next two services https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/ser ... vice-plans

There may well be a condition within the PCP contract that says the car will need to be serviced within the dealership, you need to read through the terms and conditions.

Personally I would play safe and go to VW for the servicing.

I would also recommend going to the VW dealership and also remember the VW website states,

Better quote? We'll match it with our Price Match. Just bring your quote with you on the day.

So maybe an option for you?

Don't forget that at 3 years a 4 motion needs a Haldex oil change and a brake fluid change. Neither of these is included in the minor service charge of £179.
Oil change is £79 and brake fluid is £69.
Had my 3 year service done yesterday.
You will probably get told that VW recommends the aircon needs a service, another £99. Needless to say I didn't take them up on that offer! It's working fine.

Don't forget to ask your dealer to clean the Haldex oil strainer otherwise the Haldex unit can fail. The Tiguan mk2 uses a Haldex 5 unit with a gauze oil 'strainer' (not a filter as in previous versions of Haldex). This can become blocked at low mileages and there is no indication the Haldex unit has failed unless you check the drive to the rear wheels or read the fault code with the necessary software. VW do not include cleaning the strainer as part of the Haldex oil change.

Have a quick read of this https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/h ... an.379347/

If you Google Haldex 5 blocked lots of complaints from owners.

A big thanks to everyone for there comments and advice.

I've been in touch with my dealer and they are doing the service and MOT for £219 as on Volkswagen website as opposed to the £270 they originally quoted me!

They have not mentioned anything about brake fluid change, or Haldex oil change at the moment, but they normally recommend and engine oil flush and a fuel system flush, both of which I decline as if they were required they would surely be on the service sheet to be done.

I will look at getting the Haldex changed by my local independent VAG specialist as I definitely know that they also clean the strainer as I had my Audi done there and they did it while I waited so was able to see exactly what they did.
