Cable you split the OBD Port into Two

Does anyone know if you can split the OBD port into two, I have the carnet currently plugged into the OBD port for my 2019 Tiguan, the 2018 version did not have this as it was built in but for some reason my 2019 has the carnet plugged into the OBD port.

Now i have just seen that Blackvue offer a OBD power adaptor where you can use the OBD port to power the system but it also have the advantage of having all setting you get on the power magic available.

https://www.blackvue.uk/collections/product-page/products/power-magic-ez

So if you want to turn off the power to the cameras if you are storing the car for a few days whilst going on holiday it will stop recording when not needed, the other version you have to hide somewhere and also power via the fuse box, plugging into the OBD port means no wiring of the fuse box required and all you have to deal with is running the cables.

But can you split the OBD port like this, i have seen splitters on Amazon for around 9 pounds but will it work?

The data plug has always been fitted in to the OBD port, there is nowhere else it can go. This is for the VW Connect app only - not Carnet.

Carnet is a completely different system and doesn't use the data plug, it uses either an inbuilt SIM or is tethered to a dongle/wongle/phone.

You can have either one active or both at the same time, they are not connected in any way whatsoever.

Thanks, but the question is can you split the OBD and have that in one connection and the dash cam power lead in the other, I would have thought it possiable as the dash cam lead is only after power requirements so there will not be a issue with two devices trying to communicate to the car at the same time.

I've never seen the OBD port split, I'm not aware how that would work reliably as the port is not designed to have two concurrent data transmissions.

I take the point that the dashcam is 'just' power but that's not what the OBD port is designed to supply either. I'd look a traditional hardwire kit for the dashcam instead.

I am sure Blackvue must have looked into this before releasing the OBD power cable surely.

I'm sure they have. Still seems a compromise solution to me though, especially where you have other requirements for OBD use in your case.

From my point of view, if something requires a power supply in the vehicle, I'd do so via available fusebox supply arrangements rather than OBD.

Agree but if you want to install the unit yourself and do not feel confident to touch the fuse box it's a workaround.

I've split my OBD so that I could fit both the VW Connect dongle and the connection to my Aliexpress Head-Up display. Splitter tucks up behind.

Splitter cable is ÂŁ3.30 from eBay (search for J1962 splitter )

Ding ding, we have a winner!!!
Though, just a thought. How long have you had that setup with the OBD cables and the items connected to it?
Anything to do with your battery draining?

What's the ding ding mean?

I bought the cable ages ago but never fitted it till yesterday, prompted by getting a free dataplug from the dealer.

Someone answered the OPs question :)

Interesting that a solution has been found.

Would I want to plug a ÂŁ3.30 cable into my car's diagnostics port? That's a no from me, but that's different people's risk appetites for you!

You can get more expensive versions if you want one. ;)

Wardy was right to be cautious. The splitter hasn't caused any problems, but the HUD and the data dongle weren't playing well together. While I love the HUD, the dongle doesn't really do much that I want, and only works when the ignition is on, which isn't much use.
So splitter is back off for now. :)

You can share data at the same time so the HUD and data dongle would clash, you could use the port to supply power for the BlackVue as no data is share at the same time.
