No charge schedule possible with 2024 ehybrid

I have just taken delivery of the latest Golf GTE PHEV which has the latest 1.5 engine. I think I have the same problem. I cannot charge using a timer in the car unlike my previous 1.4 version.

’Charging loc’ is missing. Unlike in the bottom photo from a ID7. Does the screen in the Tiguan also have the ‘Charging loc’ missing?

For the last four years I have charged my Golf Mk8 GTE using a 13amp granny charger and set it to charge using the timer in the car. Now I have the Mk8.5 version I a want to charge it the same way but now annoyingly I have to set it to start charging manually. Not in a position to change to Octopus Intelligent until next April and reluctant to buy a wall charger.

gtoth23gt have you spoken to the dealer about this? I have booked in at the end of the month with my dealer about this but I fear they will say “they all do that, gov.”

Sorry. I have posted both my and a ID7 infotainment screen on this forum twice. I am following this issue on three forums and obviously getting a bit confused. Please note that this Tiguan forum is the most informative on this subject. The other two are also not very positive about a satisfactory outcome 😢.

Bad news and good news.

Took my Mk8.5 GTE to my dealer yesterday for them to find the missing in car drive battery charge timer which had been present in my previous Mk8. Much to my annoyance they confirmed that, like several on this forum have said, this useful function is not available.

BUT they did say that VW are planning to make this feature available sometime in the future. They had no idea as to the timeframe. Thought it might be done over the air.

Found the following on the Volkswagen Newsroom dated 5 March 2024 -

“19.7 kWh high-voltage battery. The new Passat eHybrid will enable electric WLTP ranges of about 100 km. Previously, it was up to 57 km. The significant increase in range is achieved thanks to a new high-voltage battery. Its net energy content increases from 10.6 to 19.7 kWh compared with previous versions (gross: 13 to 25.7 kWh). The battery has a new cell technology for the 96 modules and external liquid cooling. Since the lithium-ion battery is also positioned in front of the rear axle, the interaction with the front-mounted drive (electric motor, DSG, TSI) results in balanced weight distribution.”

So the battery is a surprisingly large 25.7 kWh. Playing with figures I suspect at 100% the battery capacity is the 25.7 kWh. At 80% 20.56 kWh. This might mean that at ‘0’ miles range the battery is damagingly depleted at a mere 0.86 kWh.

All I want to know is what is the actual buffer when the range has dropped to ‘0’ miles.
Anyone know?

Just gone on the Octopus website to see if I could go on their Intelligent Go contract. Under compatible models all Golf GTEs were listed APART from the latest version. Sadly there were no Tiguans on the list at all.
I despair.

I always go to bed after midnight so just before I go up timber hill, across carpet common and down sheety lane I go to the garage, unlock the car, plug in the car, lock the car and turn the switch on the 13amp socket. The white light comes on but the green charging light doesn’t usually appear for ten minutes or so. If I was to go to bed much earlier I would consider getting a suitable good quality timer from someone like Tough Leads. This doesn’t help those that don’t use granny chargers.

I'm clutching at straws here, but when i get my car back, I'll look to mirror your connection sequence (with my Ohme charger) to see if it negates the car's desire to charge immediately, and literally suck the life out of my 12v battery again until it reaches 00:30:

-Set an off peak charging schedule in the Ohme app
-check that this schedule is mirrored on the charger
-Turn ohme charger off at the fuse box
-unlock the car
-connect ohme charging cable
-lock the car
-turn ohme charger back on at the fuse box
-hold my breath

Hopeful outcome: Charging LED turns green, or remains off, or maybe turns yellow to really spice things up.

Likely outcome: Charging LED turns solid Red, I swear profusley and subsequently drown my sorrows down the pub.
Have you breathed out yet 🙄?

I will shortly be moving house. The garage is about 15 metres away from the house where the smart meter is positioned. If I wish to have an ’intelligent’ contract the charger has to be connected to the smart meter. This is not practical. Therefore I will have to either continue using a 13amp socket, like I have successfully done for over 4 years but for convenience get a timer OR get a charger and utilise the timer built into it.

Still pi*sed off that VW have removed the built in timer.

I think running a cable across stone clippings would be frowned upon by an installer. Not going to dig a trench or run a cable on poles either. That is the timer I was thinking of getting. Manufactured locally to me.

I think we should be chatting on the GTE Forum (I have same username) since Tiguan owners might regard us as interlopers.

With all the issues with the latest VW PHEV system and home chargers I plan to continue using my 13amp Granny charger. Soon moving house so plan to have an Octopus Go contract. 8.5p/kW between 00.30 and 5.30 so should put a decent amount of charge into the car PLUS I could operate my washing machine and dish washer during that time period at that cheap rate. In summer I might, just might, be able to charge the car through the solar panels provided I don’t run too many things in the house.

Please feel free to say if this plan is flawed in any way.

Thanks for your reply and supporting my charging plan. Pleased to hear it works.

I suspect to add the missing charge timer to the latest VW PHEV system is not something that can be done over the air (OTA) and I can’t see VW with it’s current financial woes doing it as a recall through their dealers.

Like you I’m p*ssed off that VW has chosen not to include this function.

I might be wrong but, unlike Tesla, VW tend to only do minor updates OTA. In fact I have never noticed any noticeable change in four years of Mk8 and four months of Mk8.5 GTE ownership after a OTA announcement. Anything significant has always been done in a VW workshop and adding a charge timer is pretty significant. I hope to stand corrected.
