Tiguan doesn’t always creep in drive and then when I apply gas it jerks forward and goes

Hello everyone :)

iv recently purchased a Tiguan 2.0 TDI SE Navigation DSG Euro 6, 18 plate.

love the car but I am new to automatic and wonder is the below normal or a sign of an issue?

when I first start the car and move it into drive it doesn’t always creep by itself, then after Iv got bored of waiting and apply some gas the car jerks forward and then drives off fine.

If I first put the car into reverse, it creeps back by itself fine and I then move it into drive and it doesn’t creep and then jerks after I apply gas.

I’m not certain yet but it seems to be only when being driven after being left for a while or the first drive of the day.

another example, I was parked on a slight slope and needed to drive forward. I put the car into drive, foot on foot break, released hand break and whenever I released the foot break the car would start to roll back and the creep wouldn’t kick in, I was worried to leave it too long to kick in, as there was fence behind me! So I hit the gas and the car jerked forward and then drove fine.

thanks all, appreciate any advice or words given!

regards

Do you have auto hold switched on? This stops the car rolling back. There is a switched which is illuminated when enable underneath the handbrake switch

The jerking is a characteristic of the DSG. There is a slight hesitation when pulling away. It does creep forward if your foot isn't on the brake or auto hold is disabled

Some members have had success with putting the DSG into sport mode, tweaking with OBD Eleven / VCDS or Carista and or fitting a DTUK pedal box

Oh, and welcome to the forum, we are a nice bunch

Thanks for your reply! Assuming by your name your a janner? I’m also a janner :)

I would need to check but I think auto hold is switched on, although as the car creeps forward when coming off the break I haven’t really noticed it.

it’s just it doesn’t creep sometimes and then I get impatient and apply gas and you get that jerking motion then a clean drive. When the car creeps from a start and I apply gas it’s nice and smooth, should it always creep once put into drive? Otherwise every time it doesnt creep I pull off with that motion and that doesn’t seem normal lol

Cheers :)

If you are new to automatics you may only have experienced the usual torque converter type which want to creep forward as soon as you release any form of braking. This isn’t the case with a DSG and can even roll back if you’re stopped on an incline. That is why (I believe) they have the auto hold hand brake that applies when the car stops and releases when you press the accelerator to pull away. In effect, driving ’through’ the handbrake.

Thank you! Yeah I get the roll back, but from my Experience so far when you go off the foot break the car automatically starts to creep forward or backwards in reverse, with no gas applied.

apart from on said rare occasion (I think when it’s the first journey or car has been sat for a while) when I end up applying gas and it jolts forward.

I’m completely new to autos, and I am talking from less than a week of driving one , but I just don’t understand why on occasions the creep doesn’t kick in and I end up with that horrible jolt and jerk forward, leaves the wife scared everytime haha

Thanks for your reply! The garage had given it a fresh MOT and service before I picked it up, I’m assuming they SHOULD have checked that as part of the service?

the car drives nice and smooth and the gear changes are not jerk at all while driving. It’s just that first pull off.

so this morning, start the car put it in to R it creeped back automatically, into D to pull away it didn’t creep, I apply gas and it jerked forward and drove away (it’s quite a big jerk, very noticeable) then drove fine, no issues on gear change. Dropped the kids off to school back into the car, put it into D and it creeped away automatically, I apply gas and pull off smoothly.

As it’s my first auto, I’m stumped on why it does this, it doesnt seem normal, I don’t know if it’s something I’m doing, a fault or something normal.
Cheers

I think that possibly it's something that you just get used to with DSG? I'm sure you will also be aware of how smoothly it is always in the 'right' gear? You could try moving the gear selector into 'S' just to compare?Once you wind it up it is quite quick?

Thanks pioter! It does creep in D, just not always from being parked. When it does creep the pull away is nice and smooth but when it doesn’t, if I start to get impatient and apply gas then it jerks forward and drives off fine.

today a few times from park, I started the car, foot on the foot break, car into D, release the parking break and then the foot break, no creep to get going. I tapped the break again once or twice and then it creeped and I pulled off nice, hoping that’s the solution? Will test it again tomorrow.

it creeps fine in D during journeys, at lights, roundabouts etc

thanks again!

Evening all, appreciate all your advice! Iv done some playing and testing today when driving the car and it seems that when I first start the car and put it into drive to pull away, if I tap the foot break again after I release it, the creep kicks in and I pull away much better!

Will continue to monitor it and play around over the coming days. Everything else seems to run really well so I am thinking it’s a case of me finding what works as it’s new to me. No other issues pulling away with creep from a standstill only when returning to the car after it’s sat for a while/been parked overnight and the parking break has been on, it’s off when I try to pull away though.

I have had auto hold off since buying the car.

cheers

I used to have a similar experience if the car had been sat overnight, especially if it was damp. It was almost like the parking brake was sticking to the disk and needed a nudge to release. Was slightly worse in reverse
