As an aside to this I'm quite surprised you didn't get a 'low battery' warning for the key fob battery(ies) in the dash display.

In the link I posted to previously someone says 'Sometimes they will appear OK for voltage on a multi-meter, but fail to maintain voltage under load'. I think they are relating to 'fake' batteries that may appear to be genuine Duracell and the like but are cheap copies https://www.microbattery.com/counterfeit-sony-watch-coin-batteries

Perhaps when trying to unlock the car the fob battery is under load so it draws too much load so nothing happens, but once the car is running it takes minimal battery load to keep the connection active to the car hence no low battery warning.

I'm no electrical expert but I'm sure a forum member may be along soon to explain further.

Problem solved, even though I tested all the 2032 batteries that I had and they showed up as fine!! It was indeed the battery!! How stupid do I feel!!

Thanks for all your help guys/girls.

Neil
Glad it is sorted, enjoy the rest of your weekend relaxing

Turnster - I think you need to look in to why your door lock just spins. Try it again now your batteries are working and see what happens, if it still doesn't seem right it may be a trip to the dealer.

I've heard of this happening 10+ years ago on VW models but as most people use a remote and not a key in the door they wouldn't know if the door lock worked manually or not.

I think you will find the battery needs replaced, easy to do just Google it, good videos on YouTube.

Good Day,

my spare key doesn’t start, it says hold key Next to marked surface owners manual. I tried several times but I failed
I have had the problem and thought it was with both fobs. I isolated to the effected fob by using each fob quite a distance from each other and worked out the one work fine and the other was faulty. The faulty fob signal was interfering with the good fob. By leaving one fob inside the hose and then trying each individually you can identify the faulty fob - the other one should them work fine once they are separated from each other

“Key Not Found” issue with VW cars. I have encountered this issue several times with a 2017 VW Jetta SE TSi. I believe I have found what causes it and how to resolve it. Context: the engine is running and the car is stopped. If a door or a window is opened for at least 30 seconds, the “Key Not Found” warning will be displayed. This warning message will continue to be displayed for as long as the engine is running. In order to resolve this issue, the driver must stop the car and turn off the engine. Wait at least 30 seconds and restart the car. The message should disappear. You may have to hold the key close to the steering column in order to restart the engine. This assumes the key battery is still good.
