Did you ever get that issue sorted mate? I'm having the exact same issue with my 69 plate Passat. Same symptoms
Sold the car to be honest, I paid the garage to change my transmission oil and filter. Issue disappeared for a week and came back. It’s a mechatronics issue as many have said in this thread and I couldn’t afford to pay 2k to fix it and too many inconsistent advices, some said I need to replace whole gearbox some said change the solenoid

My complaint to the dealer......

Dear Sir or Madam

RE: Diagnostics appointment on 18/04/2025 for Tiguan

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the appointment service I received at your dealership in Bromley.

I had scheduled a diagnostics appointment for my 2018 VW Tiguan, on April 18, 2025, due to an ongoing issue with the gearbox, indicated by fault code P0805, please see the attached picture of the AA mechanic's diagnostics. I received confirmation of this appointment on three separate occasions, which led me to believe that my visit would proceed smoothly. Please see screenshot of text, email and phone call confirmation attached for your convenience.

To my disappointment, upon arrival, I was informed by all your salesman I saw and Mathew, that the service department was closed that day. While I appreciate Caroline's efforts to calm me down and clarify the situation, I find it unacceptable that I was given an appointment for a day when the service team was not operational. The lack of communication and organizational oversight in this scenario is concerning.

Not only have I incurred costs by taking time off work to come to the dealer, but I also faced the additional stress of driving my Tiguan back in emergency gearbox mode—a situation that occurs every five minutes due to the aforementioned fault code. As a conscientious car owner who has consistently serviced the vehicle, including gearbox oil changes and timing belt change, I expected a higher level of service.

I am particularly frustrated by the apparent lack of awareness among your staff regarding the appointment issues, as well as the inconvenience it has caused me. Given the circumstances, I would like to know how Volkswagen intends to compensate me for this situation, particularly as I left without being able to address my car's persistent issues. I have seen some experts in the field and they pointed out the problem with the make of the my Tiguan may be the common mechatronics issue. Thus, I hope there will be recall for the issue, if it is the case.

In addition to resolving my immediate concern, I would like to express my hope that this issue can lead to a broader review of the appointment scheduling process to prevent similar incidents in the future. It is crucial for customers to feel supported and informed when dealing with vehicle issues.

I look forward to your prompt response regarding this matter and any compensation you might consider appropriate. Thank you for taking the time to address my concerns.

Sincerely

The symptoms you are describing with odd gears only after longer drives are that of a DSG mechantronic unit failure. Search this thread / this forum or the internet. Expect this is what the main dealer will diagnose and advise replacement of the mechatronic at main dealer labour rates.

As your car is 7 years old and out of warranty, in your position I would contact VAG specialists who have VW diagnostics describing your symptoms to enquire how much to change a mechantronic or if they can send mechantronic units away for refurbishment as the posts on this thread and others. They should be able to give an idea of replacement costs for a mechatronic.

Did you realise you had booked your car in on Good Friday bank holiday? Garages shut their service departments for bank holidays. I normally ring VW Bromley service desk to check I am booked in OK / discuss a few items, ahead of receiving Group 1's automated e-mail confirmations.

I did realise its Good Friday. I called them up but no answer. I emailed on VW website and they called me up to acknowledge and they will send me text message to confirm. Below is the text message. I replied to text message but did not receive a reply, may be because of one way texting system. I did not wanna miss the appointment and afterall they did send me the confirmation text. I was also sent an email.

After my coplaint and after a long heated talk with with Service Manager he eventually decided to give me ÂŁ29 off and paid him ÂŁ115 for diagnostics.

They said it is faulty mechatronics. They quoted ÂŁ1617.34 to replace mechatronics unit.

He said they will not recall even though this is happenning to many Tiguans.

As you are aware, there are many posts regarding this problem on this forum, if your vehicle is not covered by warranty then any garage can organise the repair for you for considerably less than that.

Hi

I got p0805 p173600 codes repaired. Mechanic got out the mechatronics unit and replaced the two sensors. Gave 6 month or 10k miles guarantee. Cost me ÂŁ750. Drove for 1 hour to the mechanic with the the engine going into limp mode about 4 times. Drove back over 1 hour as there was some traffic but without any limp mode or any fault codes. Mechanic took my car in for repair and text me baxk after 4 hours to tell me car is done.

I wrote about this problem in February. It was only when we forced the error to appear and were able to get the VW dealer to read the code immediately that it was confirmed as the mechatronic unit being faulty.

In Australia we have protection through the Australian Consumer Law, which covers major failures for items where it is expected that they be “good for purpose” for a period of ten years. So even though our warranty period had expired for our 2017 Tiguan, we made it very clear to the dealer that we knew our rights, and that the dealers’ call was on VW for a replacement part and our call was on the dealer for cover of labour to fit the part.

Thankfully there was no argument and the part was replaced last month at no cost to us.

We still have to go for a long drive the test the new unit, and plan to do that in about four weeks.
Thanks for this advice. Had the same problem happen and my VW dealer quote $4k to fix and thanks to you I quoted the "good for purpose" and ended up not paying a cent plus got a hire car for 6 weeks while the part was being shipped. Definitely push back if this happens to you, interestingly the lady at the hire car company said she had 4 people in that week with the same problem so they are very aware of it!

Coming across an issue with my Tiguan 2017 2.0, 7 speed dsg auto - 45300miles on the clock.

After 35mins of driving roughly the emergency gearbox mode (you can drive on) comes up and goes into limp mode. I then switch of the engine and it goes back to normal for 20 mins then message comes back.

If I leave the car overnight, it drives fine Asif nothing is wrong until it's all warmed up roughly 30mins of driving then back into emergency mode only gears 2 4 and 6.

My friend plugged it into his basic code reader and fault P0805 clutch positioning sensor circuit came up.

Any ideas what this could be or anyone came across similar issues?

I've read about mechtronic box failure but surely not being 2017 and only 45300 on the clock, and of course out of warranty.

Cheers
I posted back in Feb 23 about problem with mechatronic but did advise follow up.
Our 2017 car was out of warranty but Australia has a consumer protection law which states that for large cost items there is an automatic 10 year warranty.
So when the warning appeared again it went straight back to the dealer and we advised them that we would not be paying for the replacement unit, that it is covered by the government warranty and that the issue now is between the dealer and VW directly.
The mechatronic unit was replaced at no charge!
hopefully this doesn’t occur again outside the 10 year warranty period.

Not seen any reported repeats of Mechatronics from any Forum members.

Hey mwhy Aussie

Which state do you live in? I'm in VIC and have a 2018 Tiguan Allspace. Driving home yesterday had the same problem, gearbox into emergency mode, skipping gears and no reverse gear. Curious about how you went about it with the dealer and what your costs were for the labour to fit the part?

Thanks for your help!
Live in NSW on the border and car registered in NSW, but dealer in Vic.
Consumer law is nation-wide.
just read my thread and tackle dealer head on.

Hello all, I know this is an old thread, but I’m hoping someone can help. Last week, this fault code started appearing multiple times after about an hour of driving (it’s fine for the first 30 minutes or so): P1736 00 – Clutch 2 Position Sensor – Electrical Malfunction I had the gearbox oil changed in April and a new battery fitted a few months ago — I’ve read that either of these could potentially trigger this fault. I spoke to a specialist who said it’s likely the mechatronic unit will need replacing, as this is a common issue with VW DSG gearboxes. Has anyone managed to fix this without replacing the whole unit — for example, if it was just a sensor problem caused by the oil change or new battery?

Hi, just had the same issue come up on my 2019 Tiguan allspace. 103000kms. I’m in Australia and have been quoted approx $4200 for a new mechatronic unit. Not sure if this price includes installation. I’m shocked at the issues I’m having with a relatively new car. Just paid for the start/stop glow plug to be replaced.

Hi to everyone, if you located in the UK there's a place where they repair your mechatronics. https://www.ecutesting.com/
I just had my one repair and so far all good. However I had to take my tiguan to a specialist of gearbox to remove it and send it to them to repair, after that they had all the fluids replaced and reprogram the gearbox. Total cost ÂŁ1680 with VAT included.

Good luck to everyone. Also they ECU testing gives lifetime warranty to the mechatronics after the repair.
