Having spent some time with main VW agents who did not know about off peak scheduled charging and my new car and after phones calls from Germany it has been confirmed that the Tiguan ehybrid 2024 cannot be charged on a time schedule from the app or wall mounted charger. VW could not explain why this facility is no longer available. So it would seem that charging is only possible on plugging in. In order to use off peak electricity it means manually plugging in at 12.30 am!!

This is mad. How can this problem get through the design stage. VW know how to set up charging schedules - see ID models. The electronic manual for the VW 1.5 ehybrid has the ID charging schedule. How can this problem exist - my theory is VW purchased a cheaper set of dud chips and will never solve this problem without replacing the appropriate chip set. It’s a manufacturers recall problem,

I'll post again to keep my comments fresh, noting a couple of edits since I last posted:

I've been good for 6 weeks now with a delayed charge every night (golf GTE 8.5)

I have ohme pro, with an off peak tariff (it doesn't matter what supplier you have or tariff, just DONT link your tariff with your charger!! I'm on Octopus intelligent Go, to get 6 hours in total of off peak, but as above, in no way should u link this tariff with your charger as the constant polling throughout your plugged-up period will 'kill' ur car.

Dynamic charging set to off in the ohme app

Update ohme app with a manual tariff i.e set off peak timings in the 24 hour period and price per kwh to get accurate costing per charge.

If found that i don't need to solid this next step:
-Sync VW connect app when I get home.
-wait 10 mins or so to sync the ohme app, which pulls down the latest battery level.

Plug up when I get home

Initiate a 'max charge' within 10 seconds of plugging up your car, via the ohme app (LED should be flashing white still). You can also initiate this from the charger's screen.

Charge Point LED will pulse green when max charge starts.

Lock the car

Wait 30 seconds, then press 'Smart Charge' in the ohme app.

The car will now 'sleep'....LED will turn to solid white (if you see Red, that means the 12v battery is rapidly discharging). A good confidence check is hearing an audible 'clunk' a couple of seconds after pressing smart charge, which for me, means the 12v battery is in a 'safe' state

2 mins later, the LED will turn off

My car wakes up 2330 ish, and charges until 100% (I have 100% set in the infotainment system)

I have stayed up a couple of nights while charging and can confirm that the LED turns off when the charge is complete (obviously super scared of it turning red).

I've felt a lot of pain getting here...3 dead batts....tariff swaps .....1 x hire car (a Seat cupra which had delayed charging in the infotainment system lol)....VW milton Keynes HQ mugging me off....Breeze Poole mugging me off).

It's my understanding that the new Golf, tiguan and passat have the same software baseline, so this should be good for all 3 models.

Hi Chris. We've just got a new Passat hybrid and are having exactly this issue. Scheduled charge using cheaper electricity stops during session and battery not charged by morning. If we simply plug in and start immediately no issues. But we have to stay up until 11.30pm! Did VW tell you this is a known problem with the Tiguan? Thanks, Anna

so just a quick update on this thread. took delivery of the car earlier this week. it's obviously early days but I've charged three times now using ovo anytime tariff+hypervolt charger with zero problems. car has fully charged using off peak tariffs. Plugged in, it's waited for the cheap schedule to kick in with a white flashing light on the car, then gone green as soon as charging starts. the hypervolt charger then informs me when the EV is no longer accepting a charge so i know its full.

The ovo anytime tariff allows charge at any point in the day, and sends specific schedule times to the hypervolt rather than me setting between X and Y times so I have no idea if this makes any difference.

Not sure if the latest Tiguan deliveries have resolved this issue or if an update has been placed on my car prior to receiving it but as yet, I have had no issues in getting cheap charging with the car.

I'll post another update in the next couple of weeks to see if any issues are spotted, but so far so good for me.

figured i would give my feedback for others in that im able to successfully gain cheap rate charging with the car, as i said it's early days.

To your point though, I can't think of any reason why on earth i would ever keep it plugged in for 24hours after i have charged my car - but logic to me says this is no different for the 12v battery to keeping internal lights on or radio for 24hours etc. i'd expect the 12v battery to take a hit in that time frame.

Another interloper here - Passat eHybrid Have read the whole thread with interest and despair  I'm using the 3-pin VW Charger (ÂŁ220! no longer comes as standard - thanks vw). Could you confirm which smart plug you use and also that you haven't found it starts to drain the battery before the set time as is mentioned elsewhere in the thread? Cheers

Further update now after 3 weeks of use and numerous charges. Haven't had a single issue doing scheduled charging via Ovo Anytime tariff/Hypervolt 3 and a 25 plate tiggy.

This now includes several overnight sessions where I've plugged in and left it for several hours before charging has started or charging has finished.

A couple of settings to note - i have turned OFF battery optimise within the cars infotainment system. That was causing the car to cut the charging off at irregular charge points 50% 60% 80% etc. and also set it to allow to charge to 100%

Also turned off Random Start within the hypervolt settings as this was causing issues initially to get Hypervolt to sync with Ovo anytime.

I have honestly no idea if this Tiguan has received a fix to this issue prior to delivery or not (happy to compare firmware versions etc) but i'm certainly not seeing this same fault using Ovo Anytime tariff.

Hope this helps anyone else.

I thought that frequently charging the battery to 100% resulted in reduced battery life and, that it was better to routinely charge to 80% with occasional 100% charges? I don't have an electric car and it's been quite a while since I studied this, so could be wrong.

If I had a full electric car that I intended keeping long term then yes, I would only charge to 100% occasionally when needed. However, with a plug in hybrid with a more limited range, then I charge to 100% most of the time as I run on electric virtually the whole time, with only 1 tank of petrol used in 5 months now for a long motorway journey. I would assume a lot of people now have their cars on 2/3 years PCP so would not be too worried that long term the battery life and thus range would decrease. I previously had a Ford Kuga PHEV for two years which I always charged to 100% given a much lower range than the new Tiguan, and didn’t notice and marked reduction in battery life/range in that period. My neighbours Tesla after 3 years is now down 10% on battery life/range.

I have the same problem with my Golf eHybrid FPG. I only have a basic cable that plugs in to a house socket. My solution is to plug in the charger in the afternoon. The car starts charging immediately, so I pause charging via the Infomatic screen. At 10 pm our cheap electricity period starts. It is also time to let the dog out for a few minutes. While the dog is out I log in to the car from my mobile phone using VW´s mobile app and am able to start charging. The charging rate is only 2kw, and the car is ready by 8 am when the electric price doubles. When I complained by email to the local VW agent, the salesman who sold me the car says that he has activated scheduled charging and would phone me with instructions, or I can visit the agency for him to do this job. So far the phone call has not come, and I have not visited the agency which is an hour´s drive away. Alan

I’ve seen that the 2025 Tiguan now has the scheduled charging as described in the 2024 model handbook. Is the same true for the 2025 Golf? VW keep on kicking the can down the line with a so say soft ware update in the third quarter of the year. We should all have taken the cars back and demanded a refund.

Why has VW decided to not add a scheduled charging option on the ninth gen VW Passat ehybrid, absolutely crazy!! Come on VW, get it sorted!! If Beka and Hotpoint can add scheduled timers to my dishwasher and washing machine so they can run through the early hours of the morning taking advantage of lower electricity prices, why cant you add it to the ninth gen VW Passat ehybrid and Tiguan??!! It was available on my eight gen VW Passat ehybrid, what was your thinking on taking it away? Would love to know you reason.....

Yes I have a VW Tiguan purchased last December. Charging is a nightmare. I plug in as late as possible - 11:00 on max charge and accept paying full price for the first half hour to get the rest at the cheap rate. I’ve been given various updates for the charging software upgrade but the goalpost keeps changing. Now said to be the third quarter of this year. In my view this is never going to happen unless VW change the appropriate chip in the car. We have been sold an item that does not correspond to the instructions in the electronic manual. Trade description incorrect!?

Recently on Channel 5 there was a programme about electric cars. It was recommended not to use the smart charger’s timer to charge the car. Personal information from your car can be gathered by the charger and potentially forwarded to a third party. It was suggested that one should use the car’s timer - BUT WE CAN’T. VW has failed to install a timer in the Golf MK8.5 GTE or other VW Group PHEVs.

Hi all,

We have a user on one of the Tiguan eHybrid Facebook groups, he has posted this video of the scheduled charge option being present on his 2025 Tiguan. Can anyone comment on this? Or test and confirm? Cheers all

Just to be completely clear, this is not my video, I've just blurred out his location on the video
