I have just had a very similar issue with my 17 plate 2.0 Diesel R with 76k on the clock. Driving in stop/start traffic, gearbox went into “emergency mode only, no reverse gear.” Fault cleared after switching off engine but re-appeared a day later and then wouldn’t shift. Ended up getting towed to VW for diagnosis.
i have the all-in plan so I’m hoping the extended warranty will cover everything- will keep you guys updated.
For what it’ worth, never had any previous issues in the 60k miles ive had the car.
Hi there I have the same issue....with vw golf mk 7.5 ov had 2 new metronic units fitted and same acurance.....what was your outcome?
Thanks

From South Africa, my 2018 Tiguan 2.0 Highline TSI gave exactly the same error last weekend. When in emergecy mode, gears 1,3, 5 and 7 would not engage. Has about 79 000km (49 000 miles) on it. Message disappears after switching engine off. Was informed by the dealership it is the Mechatronics unit and has to come from Germany. Will take 21 days to arrive in Cape Town. Definitely appears to be an error with the Tiguan's mechatronics unit, that Volkswagen needs to sort out.
I am also from South Africa. 2020 Tiguan is doing the same thing after gearbox service with agents. Is there a solution? This is very frustrating.

Before 2020, Volkswagen Group equipped passenger vehicles such as the VW Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Arteon, and Audi A3, RS3, S3 with DQ380 (China Market) , DQ381 and DQ500 transmissions. However, a global pattern of sensor failures has emerged, affecting countless owners.

Two Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), 2058102/28 and 2072085/5 were created to address these issues. The latest update, published on August 26, 2024, categorizes the problem as a component-related deviation in the gearbox control unit.

The scale of the issue is significant:
  • 16 pages of affected DQ500 part numbers
  • 18 pages of affected DQ381 part numbers
  • This excludes those unknown DQ380 in China Market
  • Each page lists approximately 40 part numbers, totalling over 1,200 affected part numbers.
  • If 500 units were manufactured per part number, that would mean at least 600,000 affected transmissions—and likely over a million, considering unknown production volumes.
In China Market, they are doing 200,000km extended warranty for this issue (P1735/P1736).
If your is below 5 years, you don't pay anything. Between 6 to 7 years, I think you will need to pay 17% of the total cost. Hope that in UK, you can get your success with these clues around.

Hi there, I have the same issue with my 2018 Tigaun Rline, and I was just wondering if the all in one plan covered the replacement box. Many thanks.

Yes the VW "All-In" plan extended warranty covered the replacement of my mechatronic unit.

Hi Rich, do you know if the new sensor fitted in the replacement megatronic box is a fix for the old faulty ones that seem to break down all the time, so to future eliminate this common problem. Many thanks again. Jono.
The dealer told me it was a replacement mechatronic unit from Germany. Cannot predict if it will fail again. It failed not long after I had the DSG service. I have come across some posts that this can happen following the DSG service. The incidences are a fraction of the total units and not seen many posts of reoccurrence. I guess it’s the laws of probability of a defect.

The mechatronic unit is a sealed unit as far as I know and has it's own oil. I can't find any information on changing the mech oil. so changing the gearbox oil and filter shouldn't have any effect unless a leaned member knows different.

Coming across an issue with my Tiguan 2017 2.0, 7 speed dsg auto - 45300miles on the clock.

After 35mins of driving roughly the emergency gearbox mode (you can drive on) comes up and goes into limp mode. I then switch of the engine and it goes back to normal for 20 mins then message comes back.

If I leave the car overnight, it drives fine Asif nothing is wrong until it's all warmed up roughly 30mins of driving then back into emergency mode only gears 2 4 and 6.

My friend plugged it into his basic code reader and fault P0805 clutch positioning sensor circuit came up.

Any ideas what this could be or anyone came across similar issues?

I've read about mechtronic box failure but surely not being 2017 and only 45300 on the clock, and of course out of warranty.

Cheers
Mine was doing exactly the same, it was clutch sensor 2 in the megatronics box, fortunately the fix is covered by the warranty, a local gearbox specialist quoted over £3000 to rectify the problem but I know the cost from VW is a lot less, hope this helps.

I need to apologise for my post above, I misread the information on the mechatronic unit that is a sealed unit. That one I believe is a DQ400 whereas my understanding is that the unit fitted to VW tiguans '17 on is either a DQ381 or a DQ500 both units use the same oil that is in the gearbox. I am sorry if I mislead anyone.
