Partial update: 2 Hour 40min drive with 1 10min stop about 2 hours in. No issues yet. Fingers crossed for the drive back.
Also, my start/stop which previously wasnt working, has started to work since the battery got replaced, previously i was getting a 'high vehicle power consumption' for why the start stop didnt work.
Fingers cross that's it.
I Just remembered that on the 3 occasions my gearbox played up it dark and the lights where on pulling more power.

I had this same issue on my 2018 vw golf Gtd. Absolute nightmare. However I had a different error code , p17350 .. position sensor for clutch 1. The problem started about 2 hours after I bought the cars car will go into limp mode and would only stick on gear 2,4 and 6. As I just bought the car from reputable dealership didn’t think much of it an turned the car on an off to where it started working again. after few miles same issue… called dealership they took in for repair. Went 1 week later to pick it up drove about 5 miles same issue. second time in for repair they said it needed a software update hence why it’s playing up. They updated it an I probably drove around 150 miles thinking they’ve fixed it but the problem still come up now main dealer vw have taken the car in and they’ve said it’s a faulty mechatronic unit… took them a bloody month to figure that out.!
Hi, was this problem sorted then and how long did VW have the car to repair the issue?

pshabaaz12 only posted once 18 months ago and hasn't been back since.
Others in this thread (and elsewhere) have stated that the mechatronics unit can take as a little as a day to actually replace, once they've got the part and the workshop time to do it.

I'm located in Australia. We first had the warning 'Gearbox in Emergency Mode - you can drive on', January 2021. Took it immediately to mechanic (who works with European cars only) and he checked it and found it to be caused by a battery fault. So, battery replaced, faults cleared and no problem again even after a long drive in April 2021 of about 500 km.
This Monday, 21/2/2022 on our first long trip due to being restricted with COVID rules, we set off for a 1,000km round trip and at about 400 km the dreaded warning light appeared again. Had to stop several times along the way of the first stage of this trip and restart car to clear the light. Then engine light came on and cruise control ceased working.

No dealer was prepared to look at the problem, so we were left with no choice be to continue another 80 km approx. to our first overnight stop. Remember Australia's towns are spaced much further apart than England's. At this stage we could only travel at a max speed of 67 km and only gears 2 and 4 would engage.

Long story, short - Roadside Assistant man said don't drive any long distances (that put returning home by car out of the question) and that it the error that came up showed P0805 Clutch Position Sensor Circuit (after being stationary four about 4 hours). So the car was placed on a tray truck and shipped home and we flew. Thankfully we have roadside assistance which covered these costs ------- but we still need the problem fixed.

Seems to me, from reading the many forums that the Mechatronics is a problem known to VW but they will not recognize it to enact a Recall of vehicles. I have my fingers crossed.
Put me down to add to a Class Action!
Same thing happened to me today! From Australia too bought this Tiguan of its first owner less than week ago, and only driven on it less than 200km, while it has been serviced less than month ago, what a joke!! Class Action needed 100%

I had the same issue with my recently purchased 2019 T Roc with 37k miles on the clock. It was only the second time I drove the car and only a week after collecting it from the VW Battersea dealership. Took it into their shop and they said it needed a new control unit which is made to order and can take up to 10 working days to make and get delivered. After 10 days with no update I chased them for more information rather than "still waiting" and they contacted the factory who said that there's a backlog and the part hasn't been made yet, with no ETA in sight. Asking for a refund at this point as I feel really let down by them. P.s. they have given me a courtesy Golf in the interim, but with a dog and heavily pregnant partner, Id rather have the SUV that I paid upfront for!

I have a 17 plate tiguan with 56,000 miles and had it to garage 5 times with that problem in 6 months. It finally went to a proper vw garage to go on their machine and it was diagnosed as the mechitronic. This was replaced last week but now i have water coming in from under the glove box. Only had car since may 2022. I love the car but i don't love the issues.
Hello,

I am experiencing the same issue P173500, with water coming from beneath the glove box. Could you please let me know if you have found any solutions for water leaks? Also, is there any way to repair the part rather than replacing it?

Thank you

I have just had a very similar issue with my 17 plate 2.0 Diesel R with 76k on the clock. Driving in stop/start traffic, gearbox went into “emergency mode only, no reverse gear.” Fault cleared after switching off engine but re-appeared a day later and then wouldn’t shift. Ended up getting towed to VW for diagnosis.
i have the all-in plan so I’m hoping the extended warranty will cover everything- will keep you guys updated.
For what it’ worth, never had any previous issues in the 60k miles ive had the car.

New in this site. from Mexico. I have a 2018 Tiguan TSi 2.0 with 75K kms on it, with recent issues about going to limp mode and giving code P0805 (clutch position sensor circuit), as with the rest of the comments, out of warranty and hard to find parts (only in China via ebay). Do not know if this is a DQ200 or DQ381 type.
Have you Tiguan owners experience the same ? have found a solution other than expensive parts/labor and long waiting period of time to have it fix at the dealer ?
Regards,

Coming across an issue with my Tiguan 2017 2.0, 7 speed dsg auto - 45300miles on the clock.

After 35mins of driving roughly the emergency gearbox mode (you can drive on) comes up and goes into limp mode. I then switch of the engine and it goes back to normal for 20 mins then message comes back.

If I leave the car overnight, it drives fine Asif nothing is wrong until it's all warmed up roughly 30mins of driving then back into emergency mode only gears 2 4 and 6.

My friend plugged it into his basic code reader and fault P0805 clutch positioning sensor circuit came up.

Any ideas what this could be or anyone came across similar issues?

I've read about mechtronic box failure but surely not being 2017 and only 45300 on the clock, and of course out of warranty.

Cheers
probably a sensor, i have 45k on mine but i took the 8 years warranty. so was fixed a couple of years back.

Mine is doing exactly what you’re describing. Did you get to the bottom of it? What was it? And how much did it cost? That would be awesome if you could get back to me.

No, as they will replace your mechatronics unit with a new one. Many thousands of us have driven these for years with no problem, so they are generally reliable. However you only hear of the faulty one's, nobody posts 'I've just done 60k miles and my gearbox has nothing wrong'. I've driven DSG's for 12 years and never had a problem.

It's good yours is happened now and will be fixed under warranty, I'm betting this may be why the previous owner traded it in.

Similar issue to others as the dreaded message “Gearbox in emergency mode - You can drive on” occurred while driving from Yackandandah to Beechworth on Tuesday. Limped into Beechworth with gears 2,4, and 6 and was also able to reverse the car. Thursday drove 41km to Wodonga VW without fault occurring who ran a diagnostic (cost $210) to confirm fault P173500 Position sensor for clutch 1 electrical malfunction in DA002. Have been quoted $2565 to replace mechatronics unit. Each unit is encoded to the VIN of your car, so need to send the spare key to the dealer. Parts taking 5-6 weeks as the control unit and cover come from Germany, so left the car with Wodonga VW and caught the train home to Melbourne. Am also going overseas for a month so will next see my car towards the end of Oct 2024!

As this is a known issue, i believe VW should provide support, even though my 2018 Comfortline 132TSI Tig has done 105,000 km as it has been regularly serviced by VW dealers since new.

The sudden loss of power and speed when this fault suddenly occurs is of deep concern and could potentially be the cause of an accident if the car is travelling at speed and suddenly decelerates without brake lights showing.
